Internet at Homestead kitty – well almost

Off-grid Internet Access
As most of my regular readers already know since moving out to the homestead kitty, I have been posting to The Survivalist Blog from a friends house. Being cut off from the power grid and water from the tap was no big deal, a few modifications to the trailer, a lot of digging, a homemade generator and a set of cheap solar panels from amazon and I was set.

Washer and dryer hook-up, big screen TV, air conditioning, central heating; I don’t need all that stuff or the expense of keeping it working. Landry can be done at the local laundry mat or by using my homemade washer for small loads and hanging out on the line to dry. Most of what is broadcast over the TV is crap, I prefer to listen to the radio or to go to the theater to watch the latest flick.

Most modern amenities are easy to do without or find a substitute. The thing I missed the most was Internet access. Keeping a blog site updated, emails answered and other tasks associated with publishing online was a pain. I had to write everything out the day before and go to a friends house in town where I would plug into his Internet service. Making the trip into town everyday cost way more then I could ever make from writing this blog. Sad but true.

Well after loosing his job he decided to have his Internet service cut, considering it a useless expense, can’t blame him for that; I think I used his service more then he did. Anyhow I had to do something fast or I would be forced to stop publishing. I considered publishing a paper newsletter that would be sent to subscribers once every other month. Out of 2,000+ daily readers of The Survivalist Blog only one subscribed to the newsletter. So I scraped the idea.

After looking at all the options I decided to hookup to Verizon’s broadband Internet service. It’s not cheap around $75 a month with a 5GB monthly limit. I’m hoping my google adsense payments, e-book or Survival CD sales with cover at least part of the expense.

Where my trailer locates I can’t get a signal for the service which sucks. I would like to be able to sit down at my kitchen table while surfing the web and answering email. But no, I have to put the computer in a backpack and climb up to the top of the mountain that overlooks my place before I can get any service. But that’s just who I am always putting the needs of my readers before my own.
