Water is more essential than food in sustaining life. Store a minimum of seven gallons of water per person for drinking and food preparation. Store an additional seven gallons per person of the same quality water for bathing, brushing teeth, and dishwashing. Use heavy plastic containers with tight-fitting lids. Metal containers, which may corrode, tend to give water an unpleasant taste.

If you have any doubt as to the bacterial safety of stored water, you may purify it by boiling vigorously for one to two minutes or by adding chlorine bleach (5 percent sodium hypochlorite solution). Generally, half a teaspoon of bleach will purify five gallons of clear water, and one teaspoon will purify five gallons of cloudy water. If you store it away from sunlight in clean containers, and if it is safe bacterially at the time of storage, water will remain pure indefinitely.

As far as water storage, I know tap water can stay good for at least a year if kept in a mostly dark area. What about heat? I also keep (2) 7 gallon Aquatainers in the back of my SUV but under a tarp to help prevent sunlight. How often should I rotate the water due to the effects of heat? I'm sure this may only be an issue getting towards the summer months. Thanks!
mk

This year I finished my rain water harvesting system. My gutters drain through a pool filter then into a 3000 gallon plastic water tank. Then out of the tank through a 5 micron filter then to a pressure tank and jet pump and up to the house. I have plumbed all the toilets in the house. Every thing works great except the water is not clear, just a bit tainted. I tossed a couple of Bromine tablets in order keep down any growth.
The PH level is at 7. Neutral according to my reading. Reading about dirty looking pool water some folks say that Oxygenating the water is the key. They talk of a water fall. How about a bubbler like a fish tank.

I have to say this is a good blog for the beginner. Only problem M.D.m is that you need to let them know that those 5 gallon buckets (the collapsable ones I assume) need to be rotated out with water. Even with bleach, you CAN have little parasites grow (depending on where these people live and if it is city/well) and sometimes bleach won't help either.

Just a hint.
