"U.S. Destroyer Shells Polish Shore." The title of your link got me all excited. I thought for a minute that the destroyer fired artillery shells on the shore. Firing three rounds from an M240 machine gun is hardly "shelling" the shore. You must be taking writing lessons from the mainstream media.

Negligent Discharge - I've had a few of those. My wife always gets mad and shoves me off her.

Not quite an artillery shell.

The M240 Machine Gun is a belt-fed, gas-operated medium machine gun firing the 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge (w/ M13 Link), fired from the open bolt position.

I had a soldier do the same thing with a vehicle mounted M60 (thankfully with blanks). He got confused and thought he was seating a round in the chamber, but with an open bolt weapon you don't seat the round in the chamber like with an M16. He also shot off about 3 rounds (within the perimeter of a BSB) before he could stop himself.

I always apologize profusely and spray air freshener around after a negligent discharge.
