Review: Inside the Crucible

By Kelly McCann , aka Jim Grover – Five Volume Set – DVD – Paladin Press

Paladin was kind enough to send several videos for possible review here on the blog. Unfortunately, they only sent volumes one and five of the Crucible series, so I have the beginning and the end, but fuzzy in the middle…

The videos were filmed live during a five day training course with eight students participating. It was obvious, that some of those in attendance had very little training or knowledge of the skills being taught.

The students make quite a few mistakes during the course, but are quickly corrected by McCann or members of his training staff. To be honest, a couple of the students made me nervous just watching the video…

The mistakes and corrections presented offer a great opportunity to learn. We all make mistakes during the learning process with many of those mistakes being common for most individuals.

Being able to witness those mistakes being performed and then corrected, make it easier for those watching to learn from those errors.

Throughout the training McCann stresses efficiency of movement and deliberate action. “Slow is Fast” is the lesson here. McCann breaks down the material in a step-by-step manner that makes learning easy. Smooth, efficient and deadly.

Volumes one and five ( wish I had vol. three and four) deal with how to draw the pistol, reloading drills, clearing malfunctions, use of cover, shooting and reloading while wounded, shooting while on the ground, shooting while exiting a vehicle and other skills needed to survive a deadly encounter.

Paladin does a great job producing the videos, with excellent sound quality and video presentation. Everything is easy to see, hear and understand, a true testament to the professionalism being put forth by the folks at Paladin.

In my opinion these are some of the best instructional video available. Sure it would be great to attend live and in person but many of us because of financial or time constraints will never get the opportunity. Kelly McCanns inside the Crucible series is the next best to actually being there.Review: Inside the Crucible

Volumes Two, Three and Four include utilizing the knife, drawing and opening, the 'slice and dice' method of defending with blades; some close quarter escapes that finish with drawing the weapon and escpaing; the Tuller drill- and a very good example of how it's going to be- all in all, an excellent series of video instruction well worth the asking price. Still, try to get it on Ebay or used. IMO, Kelly is in the top two instructors- the other being Gabe Suarez, who is in a league by himself. I love when he brings a class to our area, so much fun and practical defensive gunfighting.

With the current state of our country,I think we all should consider getting this course somehow and at least reviewing it for some pointers. It could save you. Also remember to say M.D. sent you so maybe he can get alittle kick back. It's coming,we better be ready.
