Budget Priced Self Defense Pistol

by M.D. Creekmore on November 18, 2008

Hi M.D.,
Love the blog, I have found great advice for those of us who are forced to live on a tight budget, it would seen some survival blog writers think most of us have an endless supply of cash to purchase survival preps, when in reality most of us are just trying to get by with what little we have available. I appreciate everything you do here on The Survivalist Blog, you are a breath of fresh air for us common serfs.Anyway; I just completed the required course for my state (TN) to obtain a handgun carry permit and soon will be in need of a reliable semi-auto pistol that is both small and light enough for everyday concealed carry. I only have a budget of $300. I know this is not a lot to work with leaving little in the way of choices but any help or advice you can give will greatly appreciated. Thanks Adam TN

MDC answers: Congratulations on getting your handgun carry permit, it is a step in the right direction toward personal survival preparedness and self protection. Presently, I’d recommend getting either the Sig Sauer P6/225 Sig Sauer P6/225 or the CZ-82, I tend to stay away from the “pocket pistols” like the Berretta Bobcat or Taurus pt22, most people find them difficult to shoot well and the .22lr / .25acp rounds these pistols are chambered for leave much to be desired in the way of stopping power.

The Sig Sauer P225  it was the most widely issued sidearm to European Police Forces before the adoption of the Sig p226, with over half a million P225’s having been made for the EPF. It is rugged, reliable and accurate with the only negative being the limited magazine capacity of eight + one in the chamber. However; I personally don’t see this as a disadvantage, considering the fact most gun fights expend less then three rounds and take place at under seven feet, the ability to get the weapon from concealment and on target becomes the most important consideration to surviving a gun fight.

A great book that I recommend is Tactical Pistol Shooting this is the single best book available for anyone interested in carrying a handgun for self-protection.
