Bug-Out Van

by M.D. Creekmore on November 21, 2008

Mr. Creekmore,

My late father-in-law enjoyed what we would call his “bug out van” for many years. It was a 1976 Dodge with windows all around and he had fitted a platform bed against the back doors and a tidy kitchenette that included a built- in two burner cook top and an ice-box (for ice! not propane). He fashioned cupboards to fit overhead as well. All of the windows had Velcro tabs strategically placed to allow the nighttime installation of privacy curtains. It was quite the deal, actually. He had even crafted a tiny fold-down tabletop at my mother-in-law’s request so that they could sit down for their meals at a properly set table!

He used his bug out van to haul his travel trailer to Arizona every fall and from there his van allowed him to take short 2-3 day trips to remote points of interest, thereby saving himself the hassle of relocating the big trailer. My mother-in-law joined him in all of his adventures and quite enjoyed herself!

After his death at age 90 last year, my husband sold the van (which was on its third engine) to a like-minded individual. I hope he is enjoying it as much as the folks did!

The Mr., not being quite as spartan as his father before him, has elected to use a pop up camper which works out great for us. I highly recommend them even though they lack the stealth and maneuverability factors you mentioned.

I really enjoy reading your blog for its practical and cost-conscious suggestions.

Kind regards from Mrs. T.
