Computer Trouble

by M.D. Creekmore (a.k.a Mr. Prepper) on April 14, 2010

Sorry about not being able to post for the past two days – I’ve had trouble with my computer and getting online. I’m posting this from a friend’s computer,  letting you know, I’m alive and everything will be back to normal by tomorrow (even if I have to buy a new system)! Thank you for your patience.

MD,

Nothing personal but PC’s are junk in my opinion, I have had dozens and even a couple of networks.

Give a thought to a MacBook Pro laptop. You can get one with a 13″ screen for $1200 and it is well worth it. The display is fantastic and incredibly sharp and you can do more with it then a PC. I work on a 15″ display that is 3 years old and paid 3K for and the one I am suggesting is far superior to mine and the 13″ display is not detrimental whatsoever.

I switched 7 years ago and will never go back – I still have a PC in my office but use it little. Macs are very stable and virtually virus free. I now have 3 laptops and a desktop all working well.

A writer buddy of mine in Delaware just bought one after a lifetime of PC use and now swears by it.

I know you have an allergy to spending money but the savings you will experience will be much less frustration, doing the constant tweaking due to the inherent problems with PC’s and very little if any down time. In the 6 years of usage I had a Mac tech to my house twice for an hour each time to undo something I tried that I knew I should have not done. Cost me a whopping $75 for each session.

Plus the new macs are dual core so you have a PC operating system (Intel chip) built in. Once you get going with it you will really love working with a computer. http://www.apple.com

Remember the old saying, “once you’ve had a Mac, you’ll never go back!”

Obviously, you need some of the Apple Kool-Aid my friend.

WITWCT,
I am a Mac user as well. Admitting it on a blog usually brings
wrath from PC users. Too costly and how few games
are made for the Macs. I don’t care though. I quit playing games a long time ago so it’s not an issue. I bought an imac 2 years ago and haven’t looked at a PC since. People who visit like the cool design. Good luck with your computer M.D., and I second your recommendation for a Mac if the old computer is a no go.

Jim,

If you’ll notice, adverse opinions do not bother me.

I scoffed at my brother-in-law who converted his business over to Macs 10 years ago. He had a complete network & happily worked without downtime while here in the US or in China or his home town of Sydney, Australia while I went through a few PCs and costly downtime.

I work extremely fast with multiple applications going and have little patience for PC problems and reluctantly converted to a Mac.

All I can say is I now thoroughly enjoy computers and have expanded into multi media due to the simplicity of some VERY INEXPENSIVE Mac software that run seamlessly.

However, if the budget is a big concern over the value of time then maybe someone can get by with a ToShitba!

WITWCT,
The printing company I work for use MACS exclusively. The MAC PRO’s are smokin’. Stable OS, fast and reliable computers. Workhorses. I just don’t need that kind of beastly power at home so I went with the 20″ imac (not to mention it was a bit cheaper than a mac pro). Well worth the money. My kids love it and all who visit ask, “where’s the tower?” I purchased Office 2008 for MAC so my kids can do their homework projects on it. idvd is also a useful app for homework projects. One teacher in particular was impressed enough to send a note home complimenting the professional look of the presentation. We use imovie to play around with videos, as well, and have a great deal of fun
adding special effects to the movies with third party software. Unfortunately, I saw the 27″ imac about a month ago and can’t get it out of my mind. Got…..to……….fight……….urge……to…….purchase………!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Must….. stay…………..within…………budget…!!!!!!!!

Jim,

It is so funny that once you get hooked on the ease of usage and the stability of the Macs, most become Apple fanatics. Don’t know too many Windows fans like this, do you?

The iMac is a great machine. I thought MD could use the portability.

And here I was thinking that you were taking a well deserved break after last week’s deluge of e-mails… Hope the problems are quickly resolved.

If you’re going cheap, check out the Toshiba Satellite on Amazon. They work well.

I (am a computer scientist) use a Mac at home because as others have stated folks don’t take the time to write viruses for the Mac as they do for the hated PC.

The Mac says: I’m not like you, I swim against the current, I defy convention. It’s a sexy machine if you can afford it.

I don’t like sexy computers. I like straight laced Hank Hill computers that sell propane and propane accessories.

Everyone on this blog is going to hate me, but we have two newer apple notebooks, two older windows laptops & one newer windows pc in our family. Honestly, our windows pc is used the most. The apples are cool without a doubt, but are almost useless for our kid’s high school & college needs; including our work applications. Both apples have the windows 2007 applications loaded as well, but there are always issues of some sorts. I do believe the apples are a great toy, without a doubt. We run good security software & have no issues. Bottom line, my pc is used the most. Go figure?

Jim Murphy April 16, 2010 at 8:20 AM

Tony,
I don’t think you will be hated. The PC market is so much larger than Apples share is. I work in desktop publishing and we have always used MACS . The industry standard in pre-press operations. Using Adobe Creative Suite, you have an illustration program for designing logos and the like, a photo manipulation program for color correcting, photo retouching or creating effects to pictures and lastly a page layout program to bring all the elements together. The Mac Pros are incredible machines. As WITWCT mentioned, they are great for multimedia operations. What you use most is what you prefer most. No crime in that. I had a couple PC’s at home over time. After a negative experience with a new Dell, I finally pried my wallet open with a crowbar and spent a bit more than I wanted on an imac for home. I do not regret doing so and wish I had done it sooner. Not everyone feels this way. No big deal.
