Refugee

Let’s face it at some point your food storage will likely be exhausted. Putting by enough food to last five or ten years is impractical in most cases because of limited funds and storage space. At some point we will be forced to live off the land. No I don’t intend to to tell you to throw on a backpack and head for the hills, the backpack survivalist will most likely die an untimely death, after being shot, raped and robbed ( possibly in that order) while crossing paths with some other starving refugee out wondering the Wilderness looking for a meal.

You will need to learn to live from your home base, don’t become a refugee. Defend your retreat to the death, fight like hell, defend it with everything you have and you just might come out on top when the shit hits the fan. Do what you must, but avoid becoming a refuge at all costs. Sure you might make it out in the bush if you have a plan put in place before the collapse, like a four wheel drive truck loaded with the latest camping gear and a pull along camper loaded with food, water and weapons, but it is best to pick a retreat location and formulate a plan to become as self-reliant as you can possibly can.

If you can’t afford a home and 20 acres, or for some reason don’t want to leave the city because of work, school or taking care of a sick relative or what have you, you still need a safe place to go when the balloon goes up. The most important consideration is to have your own debt free piece of land to retreat to, if the need should arise. This way you will at least have a place to go. You can pull a camper out to your very own safe haven, with no need to worry about landlords evicting you or the bank taking your home and putting you out with no place to go. Which in my opinion beats the hell out of having a 20 acre retreat owned by the bank.
Learn what grows well in your area and put back the appropriate non-hybrid garden seeds and hand tools for planting a garden in your area. It’s a good idea to avoid planting your survival garden in rows as is done with most traditional garden plots. Hide your garden from unwanted people by planting in such a way as to make your garden look like a stand of useless weeds, the three sisters gardening technique works well for this, as dose the methods used by pot farmers to hide their illegal crops from detection.
Raising domestic rabbits is an excellent survival strategy. They are easy to keep requiring little space, and can live nicely on nothing more than fresh grass, hay, salt and clean water. And they breed like, you guessed it rabbits, bearing young every thirty days. One buck and five does if cared for and bred properly will keep you in meat year round. One of the best things about raising rabbits for the survivor is the fact they are quiet. Unlike chickens that crow, cluck and carry on attracting unwanted attention to your location.

Just be aware of a condition known as Rabbit starvation is a form of acute malnutrition caused by excess consumption of lean meat.

Learn about eatable plants that grow wild around your location. Cattails, acorns and dandelions are a good start. Learn to trap wild game. Methods such as snaring deer and trapping fish will be most useful after the collapse. You must figure out what works best for your own personal situation, and plan accordingly. Just do everything in your power not to become a homeless starving refugee.
Keep Surviving.
