The great thing about lever action rifles is the ability to top off the magazine with live rounds, without opening the chamber. Leaving the rifle operable and ready to fire if a threat presents itself. I can top off the magazine tube without taking the rifle from my shoulder or eyes off target.
Since the Marlin 336 only holds 6 rounds, we need to figure out how to carry extra ammunition with the rifle. Here’s what I have.
My main grab and go ammo supply is held in an 1873 U.S. Cavalry style cartridge belt holding 44 rounds. I keep this in the drawer beside my bed.
On the rifle, I have an elastic ammo cuff. The cuff holds 6 rounds and simply stretches onto the stock. I cut a hole in the cuff just large enough to let the sling stud stick through, this helps keep the cuff from working it’s way down the stock or out of position.
The Allen Yukon Sling carries 4 rounds secured in elastic cartridge loops attached to the outside, and a soft “Sharkskin” gripping surface to the inside. This is a great sling and perfect match for the Marlin 336 or any centerfire rifle.
Just in case you’ve lost count that’s that’s 55 rounds of readily available ammo – counting the 6 rounds up the magazine tube that’s 61 rounds. More than enough to take care of any hostile situation that you’re likely to encounter.
Know of other ways to carry ammo for the 336 – we’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
