Fantasy & Survival
by M.D. Creekmore on November 30, 2008
A lot has been written about survival planning over the years, unfortunately most of it was a waste of paper meant to feed the fantasies of the reader and the ego and wallet of the author. But fantasy sells. People will pay good money to feast at the table of self-fulfillment, where they can see themselves being more proficient, skillful and better prepared to survive the collapse because of their perceived survival skills or expensive tools.
There is money to be made selling expensive survival foods, weapons and gear. This is the number one falsehood being put forth by most survivalist authors; the best and most expensive gear will somehow guarantee the survival of the owner, even if he is without the necessary knowledge and skills to put those preps to his advantage. Don’t become over confident just because you have a years supply of freeze dried foods and a $1,200 black rifle. Without skill, luck and a realistic attitude you could be the first casualty claimed by collapse.
A common misconception in survivalist circles is that the Government will no long exist after a collapse. Governments do not relinquish power easily and in fact will most likely become even more oppressive during social unrest or economic collapse. I hope I am wrong here, but using history as a guide, I can see the heavy hand of big brother gripping at our throats for a longtime to come.
Also don’t think that the banks and mortgage companies will ‘forgive’ your debt. An economic meltdown will not protect you from your financial obligations and the creditors. It didn’t during the Depression and it won’t now. If you owe money, someone will expect to be paid back, if not they will take what you have by foreclosure or force if necessary. Stay out of debt. A paid for travel trailer or converted school bus on a piece of paid for “junk land” is much better then the twenty acre farm / retreat lost to foreclose after the collapse.
