For as long as I can remember, I've been bombarded with "total collapse" scenarios, starting with the first atomic bomb detonation by the Soviet Union way back in the early 50'. I endured the "duck and cover" era, the cold war, the stateless enemy threat and 9/11. In well over 55 years, TOTAL collapse has not happened. That is not to say it can't happen. I still prepare for it and I've been prepared for it for all those years. What is likely to happen (and has been happening) is the loss of trust and faith in our institutions (government, religion, schools, corporations) to support our society in a healthy way. We mistrust every instution we can think of. Our families have been destroyed. Our churches are empty. We can't even come to a consensus on providing our own healthcare while large corporations suck us dry of our wages for the short-term outlook. Our corporations are so focused on the short-term and for its own boards that we squander our developement power by handing over our manufacturing to countries that don't share the cultural values we once were proud of. No, it won't be a sudden collapse, it will be the march of the lemings to servile existence.

I don't see that it matters that much with the exception of lifes little pleasures and freedoms we will have to forgo one way or another. As you say, our freedoms are under attack and have been for quite a while now. Government keeps growing and exerting more control. Soon if Obama has his way the Constitution will be just a historical document mentioned briefly in history books. Instant collapse or gradual disintergration the same result will occur, total control by the government. To my mind the real question is will it be a national or global government. Either way prepping is an good idea.

Great Post MD, and the only way to lessen the control the government wants and Will have on most of the population is to get off grid and become as self sufficient as one possibly can. As to what anon 4:13 had to say about us "wasting" our time,,,, well, when one anticipates an act of aggression and an act of tyranny and does what is neccesary to avoid it then the only ones wasting time are those who are waiting to see what happens. Not those who are prepared. The proof is in ALL of history. Study, learn 4;13,,, those in the past who took action and prepared built a nation. Those of us who now prepare will be the ones those who have nothing comes looking for, for help and food. If they can escape the enslavement that will come. Learning how to be self suffecient and providing for yourself is what life has always been about. NOT looking to the government for what it can or will do to help. Again, study history. Good posting M.D. and I agree with it. There is still a slight chance we can take back some control at the next elections. As for the tipping point, it will start with the people on welfare, they are the ones that get everything for free and will refuse to do without. They will cause us to tip the scales by defending ourselves. To Anon-6:35 the government is worried and they better damn well be about our chest-thumping because that is why they want to take away our guns and put all of us so called prepared conservatives on their lists. The best way to lessen government control of your life is to lessen your dependence on and your entwinement in the system. Since the Unites States of Obama now owns the banks, GET OUT OF DEBT and stock pile what you will need to survive. If you can't do both, GET OUT OF DEBT FIRST. The real enemy here ironically turns out to be one of man's greatest virtues- his adaptability, fortitude, strength of character, and patience. How many times have you reached "the end of your rope", only to suck it up, shoulder the increased burdens, and toil on? Just as one who needs a job done should "ask the man who's busy", the people struggling under the greatest burdens often are the ones who can't be broken, at least not easily, and perpetually pick up more of the pieces and shuffle on. Remember the horse from "Animal Farm" that continually said "I will work harder" and "I will just have to work faster" until he destroyed himself?

There must come a point when our lives as Americans are degraded to the point where we say "enough!" and throw off the yoke. Our Founding Fathers waged war against the world's strongest empire for far less egregious indignities and tyrannies than we are even now subject to. The problem is, how and when do we *actively* attempt to take back control? When the kids are grown? Over their Spring Break? When the last round of unaffordable bills are finally paid? Once a few more cases of canned corn are stashed in the basement? When we finally have nothing at all left to lose?

We're suffering a crisis in both coherence and leadership on both national and personal levels here. Everyone's situation is different; not many are ready to slip out the back door into the night and engage in partisan resistance, and the government knows this. Therefore, they know exactly, or at least presumably, where they can move "the line" to without triggering a revolt. If you saw the jack-booted thugs kicking in your neighbor's door and dragging them outside so they could search for their firearms, how many of you would take up arms and intercede? Precious few, I would imagine, despite all of the chest-thumping rhetoric that gets posted on blogs. The government knows that, too, so they're not terribly concerned with your record ammo and handgun purchases. They know that it's highly unlikely that isolated incidences will prompt any real resistance, so they continue apace. When they're ready to step it up a notch, they'll simply disconnect you from the internet and jam up your cell phones, CBs, GMRS radios and the like and do what they wish before you can spread the word. Or run out the back door.

So many blatant violations of the Constitution have occurred in recent memory that even those who are well-versed in it's brilliance are almost numb to the abuses at this stage. So, begging the question, what, where, and when is the "tipping point"?

Anon #1 & 2 - I think prepping fits very well no matter what happens, even the increase in government control. There is no inconsistency, or not "talking his book", here. You prepare as much as possible for ANY scenario. Being as well stocked and as "off the grid" as your situation allows will benefit you in any case.

I have my own resources and skills to fall back on and have no need to look to government for help or salvation. That is all you or I can do - if they come well...

What do you think is going to happen? How do you think the collapse will play out? I'll wait while you consult your copy of Patriots...

It's hard to tell if it will be gradual or sudden. The gradual is very much like what Ayn Rand wrote about in Atlas Shrugged. The sudden though looked like a possibility last summer when the gas prices spiked, then food, utilities, etc. right behind it.

The problem with the both scenarios is how easy it is to become complacent when no immediate threat is noticeable.

If that is the case, then why do you care? Why do you prep? Whay are you wasting you time and money? Why are you wasting you life?
I’m not saying we are going to have a sudden collapse where are the bankers go into hiding and all the leeches are going to die off and then we wake up to a wonderfully restores constitutional republic. I agree .gov will get more oppressive as it is strained and gets ready to die off/become irrelevant. But people forget that .gov needs MASSIVE amounts of money, energy and other resources to operate in any sembelance of what we have today. What you state is not a given or even the most probable.
Many people I meet fail to fully understand the depths of the economic situation and the powder keg underneath the whole thing b/c it is the whole world at stake here. There will be no isolated collapses.
Rants like this irk me b/c the author is not talking his book. If what you say is the only or the most likely possibility, then there are only two prudent courses to choose from:
#1) Do nothin. Have fun along the way and just go along with the program.
#2) Stock up, train and be ready to fight to the death.
I’m not advocating one over the other, but those are the only choices for someone who see’s what you see.
