Was this ever needed. Now, anyone can have eggs and some fresh meat if/when need be. Glad, glad, glad to have the information you have shared about chickens. Never had any but planning to and I had no idea where to really begin.

Chickens can be a simple as you want, or as complex and expensive as you want.

They handle a real winter well with good ventilation and no drafts, given water and food (you feed and/or they free range) you'll get eggs and entertainment.

Chickens are simple enough that they should be one of the first things you get going at a homestead (water, a place off the main road to park, shop, shelter and then chickens). Keep in mind that if you want to start with day old chicks it's around 7 months until you get your first egg.
