How to make your own Diy blowgun in a few easy steps

This guest post was written by Hunter

Because I am in the 6th grade I am not allowed to purchase firearms or any other means of self-defense. But then I realize that not all lethal weapons are composed of a metal frame and do damage with a bullet. So I decided to make a blow gun.

Take two pvc pipes of differing lengths and a connector piece and connect them together. This is so you can disassemble it so you can store it and make it portable but also so you can clean it.

The blow gun part is finished. Now all you need to do is make the ammunition. You first take a nail and a square piece of paper and wrap the paper around the nail tightly.

After you finish wrapping let it loose a little bit so its diameter is about an inch at the top and push the nail through. Put a piece of tape across the middle now.

Now tape the nail to the paper and it’s time to test fire. Penetration is good depending on how much of the nail is showing when you pushed the nail through.

Even though it does look funny, it works very effectively. If there is one thing I know for sure it is that I will be sleeping with this next to my bed every night.

Note: Because, I used to make the same type of blowgun when I was Hunters age and he reminds me of a younger me, I’m sending him a free copy of my book “31 Days to Survival“.

I have started a file of just DIY projects. Never know what you may need to build in the future.

I used to make blowguns out of broken (fiberglass) arrows (1980’s). Short, so limited velocity, but fun. I have not revisited the idea but might. I used to shoot lentils in class, super accurate and a little sting. I might have made darts out of needles but don’t remember what I fletched them with.

    • yarn? thats what i use

We used straight pins with frayed yarn or prickly pear spines pushed through a little flower and shot them through either a straw or a gutted Bic pen.

Also made mini potato guns out of the thin brass ball point pen ink tubes with a coat hanger plunger. Stabbed the tube into the potato once on each end so that you had two plugs and then ram the plunger into the barrel and Pop! Shot the potato bullet fast enough to sting and leave a red mark…lol.

Great idea, Hunter. It is wonderful to see someone as young as you thinking of self preservation.

  4. Awesome job Hunter! Even this old bat could follow your instructions and the pic’s are great.

I am a mother of a 13 year old son who would love this idea but I’m confused – can someone please explain it better on how it works?

  6. Nice job Hunter! Now I just need some animal tranq for the tips and I’m all set :)

Hunter: I’ve been shot with worse but I still would not want to take a round from your blow gun! Properly targeted it could be very painful. Nice post. ;)

Now, on our next field trip to the Amazon, if we can catch a few of those really colorful frogs…

You’ve got a real winner there, Hunter! You’re one smart fellow because when the zombies come out to play, you’ll be the last man standing. Without any bite marks on your ankles or slobber on your forearms.

  10. Great job Hunter! Sounds like a great project.

Keep writing! I was 17 when I was first published in a national magazine. You can do that, too – or even sooner. Write about what you know. Think of your audience and what they want to know. Then do some research to find the best magazine(s) that idea might fit. Send them a great query letter and see what happens.

If you want to pursue writing, get a copy of Writers’ Digest 2012. It has all the info on magazines, book publishers & much more you could want.

Above all, just write, write, write! Good luck!

  11. Way to go Hunter. A man after my own heart! Keep it up buddy.

Love blow guns and have both home made and manufactured. Great article, around where I live we have a type of cactus plant called a yucca plant or yucca tree depending on the year. They are long thin needle pointed palms that can be slit down the center for darts and just wrap a little electrical tape on the back for the stabalizer.

    Great job on the article!
