Interview with La Razon

by M.D. Creekmore on August 13, 2009

A few days ago I was asked to do an interview with a reporter from La Razon, a Spanish newspaper based in Madrid (circulation 250,000) on the growing interest in preparedness and survivalism.

Bold text is the interviewer questions – italic is yours truly.

-Why is there a growing interest in survivalism these days?

People are beginning to realize how unstable the system is, they watch the news and read the papers and day after day they’re bombarded with distressing headlines. Financial collapse, rampant inflation, energy cost, environmental issues, pandemics etc, people are concerned about their future and they are looking for ways to protect themselves and their family.
-Some people do not take basic steps to prepare themselves due to ignorance or lack of time. How would you convince them it is worth it to make an effort and get ready for an emergency?

A lot of people don’t prepare because they think the problems will go away – that an elected official or government agency will fix things. What they don’t realize is governmental policy and bureaucracy is what caused most of the problems in the first place.

Convincing someone to prepare would depend on the person, their belief system, experiences and values.

Some would not prepare even if you showed them undeniable proof that the the world would be thrown back to the dark-ages next week. While others are more open to the possibility.

When trying to convince others to prepare it is best to start slow. Quote resent news articles on related subjects – the economy, inflation, resource depletion etc,. show historical proof that disasters do happen and will happen again.

Suggest they visit sites such as FEMA and the Red Cross these sites offer basic advice that most people can deal with and put to use.

-Can you compile a short list of easy steps someone can take to be better prepared for a catastrophe? If you could do just three things to protect yourself, which would you choose?

Stockpile food – no need to get fancy here, buy what you normally eat just buy in larger quantities. Canned foods are great with most cans having a shelf life of two or more years. Date your foods and rotate into your everyday meals. First in – first out and replace.

Get a good water-filter with extra filters.

A comprehensive first air kit and the skills to use it.

There is nothing sinister or dark about survivalism, we look at history and current events and see that the world is a very unstable place. We prepare with the hope nothing ever happens, but sleep better at night knowing we are ready if and when it does.”
