Personalizing your Mora Knife

by M.D. Creekmore on December 29, 2008

Nothing beats the Mora Knife for a light weight low cost, effective cutting tool. I have used these knives for years and continue to wonder why anyone would spend a hundred plus dollars for a knife, when the Mora Knife can be put on your belt for less than twenty. Bragging rights I guess…

The first thing I do to my Mora Knives is to thoroughly clean the blade with alcohol to rid it of oil and residue. Then I apply gun blue solution to darken the blade against the sun reflection, this is probably not necessary, but I have never liked shiny blades.

Next I drill a small hole in the handle and attach a leather thong, leaving approximately a five to six inch loop after tying. After soaking the knot in water I hang it over the wood stove to dry, tightening it up a bit. If you intend to carry your knife on a belt I would leave the thong off, because it tends to catch on trees and branches. I slide mine in a small fanny pack with my survival kit before heading out, so for me this is a non-issue.

I have never been a big fan of the synthetic sheaths that come with the Mora Knives, sure they are functional but to me nothing beats the look and feel of leather. I made the leather sheath shown in the photo in about an hour at a total cost of approximately three dollars.

Nitro-Pak is now offering Free Shipping on orders over $100, worth taking a look…

It’s more than bragging rights that leads to those expensive knives. Some people can’t get past the stick tangs that only extend a third of the way, in some cases, into the handle. Even the 3/4 tangs aren’t long enough for some. For them, it’s full tang (visible, if at all possible) or nothing, in spite of all the videos on youtube of people mistreating their nearly unbreakable Moras. It occurs to me that those people could rehandle a Mora with a shorter handle and then it would just be a knife with a short handle, but with a tang that goes clear to the butt of the handle. ;)
