Question from Jason M
I have been trying to perfect my edc for a while now. For me it’s carrying as much as I can without feeling and looking like I’m carrying a lot. I started out using an altoids tin but then I switched to try and find something smaller.
Right now I carry my edc tools in a leatherman knife sheath so I guess it’s like a micro edc. In it I have a flashlight, folding knife, tweezers, folding scissors, folding razor, peanut lighter, pry bar and a collapsable pen. I wrapped electrical tape around the cap of the pen and duct tape around the body of the pen. All these tools to replace what would be one folder and can be easily accessible on your belt. The flashlight is amazing. It’s from county comm and is the size of 1 aaa battery but pumps out an amazing 130 lumines and its legit. It was only 20 bucks. I leave the flashlight clipped to the inside of the folding part of the sheath so if the lights go out I can reach down, twist, and have hands free lighting right away but easily pulls off if need be.
The folding scissors are great quality and from county comm along with the tweezers and lighter. The collapsible pen is from true utility and very handy. Both types of tape fit perfect on each respective end and actually make the pen more comfortable since it’s so skinny. I got the folder from Wal-Mart in the fishing section. While I would prefer a brand name micro leatherman squirt this folder is just as effective but only five dollars from a brand called mustad. It might even be smaller than the squirt too. I like to clip a climbing grade carabiner to the sheath.
I got the 5.11 tactical assaulters belt and together with some rope or 550 cord you can repel out of a jam. I’ve actual practiced with both and it works. You can repel with 550 cord if you are in a jam. So with the carabiner attached to the sheath I attach a lanyard on my keys to the carabiner. I just lost my wallet recently and have ordered a new one with a lanyard (condor vault) so they will all be connected to the carabiner.
If one fails it will be secured by the others. The wallet has a spot to attach the pen so with the added room in the sheath with the pen gone I am thinking of adding a single use crazy glue. On the key I have my basic keys but also have a tiny lock which I can use to secure items in a bag or a storage place I come across. Some pepper spray.
Some people laugh when they see it and say it’s for girls worried about being raped. Police carry this because it is effective and as the slogan says makes grown men cry. It’s non lethal so it provides protection and no matter how things turn out you can’t get into much trouble for using it. I started carrying this when I read about a guy who took a young father hostage on the train I ride at knife point in front of his kids and eventually slashed his throat.
I tried to put myself in the situation of being there when it happened and wondered what I would do without a gun and how I could help if I was there without being slashed myself. So now it’s part of my edc. I’m in the process of making a small edc back pack as part of my edc. I am not in the routine of carrying one everyday yet.
I like everything smaller so a backpack is too big. I am looking into the 5.11 moab bags right now. For now though the backpack I am using has some rope, 550 cord, gloves, first aid kit and 2 small two way radios. I was in NYC when 9/11 and hurricane sandy happened and communication is a big issue when it hits the fan. That’s all I have in the back pack besides some water so I have plenty of room for storage as well. I also just got some bear deterrent like bear pepper spray and will probably add that. It’s supposed to stop a bear and has a range of 35 feet.
If it can stop a bear it can stop a crazy person although it may not be a good option for an enclosed space because of the high volume out put. I don’t want to make the bag too heavy or bulky because it’s for everyday use and chances are I won’t need it. I’ve also been considering using something like spare air which divers use to give them a minute of air in a pinch or something like it.
This would be for a smoke condition. I ride the trains a lot and if something big happens in the tunnel all that smoke will stay in the tunnels. I found a face mask called last chance that some firefighters use but am still looking and am open to suggestions here. My phone is also part of my edc. I got the kensington bungee air power case for it which is a case, back up battery, and it has a fob attached to the keychain.
If I leave the phone behind and walk 50 feet away the keys buzz. If I can’t find the phone I push the button on the keys and my phone starts playing music. If I can’t find my keys I go to my phone and the fob on the keys start beeping. It’s not perfect and can loose signal sometimes making it beep before it finds it but it’s come in handy already quite a few times. The key fob is a little bulky as well but for 30 bucks just having the back up battery makes it a good buy. I also have a large folder in my front pocket clipped. It’s the 5.11 karambit knife and the karambit blade is incredibly useful.
For now that is my edc and just looking for new ideas and additions – what do you carry in your everyday carry kit?
