Reusing barrels for storing drinking water

by M.D. Creekmore on May 15, 2009

MD,
I have a chance for some free blue barrels that have previously contained Soda Ash. The company uses the soda ash when servicing restaurant dish washing sanitizing machines.

Once I have them rinsed out, would these barrels be safe for storing drinking water? Since there are so many of them I might try my hand at barrel-ponics as well.

I would appreciate any information.

Thanks, Donny

Donny, I see no reason why you should not reuse these barrels for drinking water, soda ash (sodium carbonate) is commonly used as an ingredient in food and dishwasher detergent. Soda ash is toxic if eaten in large amounts, but I don’t think that any significant residue would be left in properly cleaned containers. M.D.C.
