I want to know what you think. Choosing survival guns is a popular topic and we all have our preferences. Personally I don’t think there is a “best” survival gun, only a number of choices suited for each individual task.
I gave up on the one gun concept long ago. There is no – one do everything weapon – the well-rounded survivor needs a small battery of weapons to adequately perform the task at hand – and everyone has their own idea of what that group of weapons should consist of.
I want to hear about your choices – you don’t even have to own all the firearms listed, I just want to know what you think the perfect, all around, do it all, survival battery would consist of.
I’ll Start Things Off With My Dream Arsenal.
1. Springfield M1A-7.62x51mm/.308
2. Ruger Mini-14 Ranch Rifle .223
3. Remington 700 or Winchester Model 70-.308
4. Remington 870 or Mossberg 500-12ga with Spare Riot Barrel
5. Ruger 10/22 – .22 LR
6. Ruger MkI, MkII, or MkIII-.22 LR Pistol
7. Springfield XD9 – 9mm Pistol
8. Taurus CIA .38spl Revolver
9. Savage Model 10ML-II 50 caliber Muzzleloading Rifle

I always get a laugh out of people who brag online about the guns they own in this age of Obama, Pelosi, and Echelon/Carnivore. Why not just send a post card listing your armory to the Dept. of Homeland Security. I own no guns. Period.
Anonymous 5:41 PM,
I think you misunderstood – this post wasn't a meant to be a list of guns owned, but a fantasy list of what each individual poster thought would make up the "perfect" arsenal for survival purposes.
Main Battle Rifle (can double as game getter):
M1A
FAL
HK91
M1 Garand
** Scoped Bolt Action Rifle:
Remmington .308
Winchester .308
Savage .308
Med. Duty Rifle/Carbine for close-in Homestead Defense:
AK47 (No Romanian)
AK74 (No Romanian)
AR-15 (Gas Piston Upper), (Best)
AR-15 (Std., best one you can afford)
Small Game Rifle:
10/22 Ruger
.22 cal. Bolt Action
.22 Cal Auto, other
Shotgun:
Remington 870 12GA
Mossberg 590 12GA
Winchester 1300 12GA
Pistol, Full size (for anytime protection):
Glock 45acp (mod 21 or 30)
Glock .40 (mod 22 or 23)
Glock 9mm ( mod 17 or 19)
1911 45acp (Best you can afford)
XD (9mm, .40, 45acp)
Pistol, For Concealment:
Glock .40 (mod 27)
Glock 9mm (mod 26)
1911 (Officers model or equivalent)
.22 pistol or revolver:
Ruger auto or revolver
S/W auto or revolver
Taurus revolver
* Plenty of ammo for all, try to standardize
on ammo, i.e., military/police calibers.
**Best Scope you can afford
I absolutely agree with the Mini-14. I like it with the classic wood stock.
M1a w/scope…good from 100 to 600 yards.
Socom16…well just because. Plus only one type of rifle ammo needed
Para Ord p13 .45acp
Remington 870
on the list..XD .45 acp and a revolver
possibly one of the springfield m6…cool little gun..plus like your add-ons
this is all you need – and the order to get them:
1. 12 gauge pump – rem 870 or mossberg 500
2. .22 long rifle – marlin 60 or ruger 10/22
3. .22 revolver
4. 30-30 lever action – marlin 336
get lots of 12 gauge shells, lots of .22 shells and few 30-30
i saw somewhere a gun provided to airmen in wwii that was 22 and 10 gauge shotgun…
Remember any gun is worthless the minute you run out of ammo for it. I would rather settle on three guns, get three each, thna have 20 each for a specific job. And lots and lots of bullets. Bullets may become the new currancy.
A lot to be said for at least one black powder rifle. You can make powder and bullets at home.
OK HERE'S THE REAL DEAL. IF YOU WANT TO REALLY KNOW WHAT TO HAVE, READ TAPPAN'S SURVIVAL BOOK OR THE SURVIVAL ARMORY. THESE PLAINLY EXPLAIN THE REASONS WHY YOU NEED ONE OF THE FOLLOWING:
1. MILITARY TYPE SEMI AUTO RIFLE. THIS WILL COVER MULTIPLE NEEDS.
2. SEMI AUTO PISTOL IN MILITARY CALIBER. ONCE AGAIN VERSATILITY. IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME, READ THE BOOK.
3. 12 GAUGE SHOTGUN, PUMP OR SEMI AUTO. ENOUGH SAID.
4. SEMI AUTO RIMFIRE RIFLE IN 22LR.
5. SEMI AUTO RIMFIRE PISTOL IN 22LR.
THESE FIVE WEAPONS WILL COVER ALMOST 100% OF YOUR SURVIVAL NEEDS FROM HUNTING TO SELF DEFENSE TO PLINKING. REMEMBER TO GET PLENTY OF MAGAZINES AND AMMO.
BASEMAN
Here's my thought:
FNAR .308
Savage 110 Bolt .308
12 Gauge Shotgun, I don't know enough about shotguns to recommend a particular shotgun.
Springfield XD9
Browning Buckmark .22 (great little pistol)
Henry .22
I would like to add a 410/22 LR over under for getting small game on the table. Cheap ammo and not too heavy to carry!
ok here we go a survival firearm is supposed to do 2 things 1/ provide food/2 provide protection/hunting a good punp action shotgun can do a lot more than .22 rifle. If you havent eaten in a few days I would rather hunt a rabbit with my 12 gauge also birds can be taken with my shotgun also it provides a lot more protection than a .22 shotgun shells can also be reloaded be sure to get one that uses 3 inch shells so you can use 3′ and 2 and 1/2,s /rifle first get a bolt action/easy to maintain tougher gun. and if you have to use cheap ammo a semi will not cycle it//hndgun ? .357 revolver 4 inch barel get some incerts and fire anything
I would prefer a Tikka .223 12 gauge combination Rifle shotgun. I had mine target chambered for 5.56 (.223) round. It is light take down ability and deadly accurate to 200 meters. The 12 gauge has the selectavility of slug or waterfowl rounds double Odd buck. What else you need? Dont be Gun Crazy one will do and you should know how to use it. period. Mike (former northern Guide)
AR 15
Remington 700 in 300 Win Mag
AK47
Marlin 336
Bolt action/semi auto .22
Mossberg 590
Sig 226 .40
.44mag or .357 wheel gun.
taurus 66 .357 mag (7-shot)
Glock 23 .40 (with 9mm conversion barrel)
Ruger sr9c 9mm
Ruger or Browning .22 lr target pistol
savage bolt action 10gxp3 .308
fn fal .308
SKS 7.62 x 39
puma 92 lever action .357 mag
Marlin 60 .22 lr
h&r 088 20 ga
winchester 1300 12 ga (22″ slug barrel and 18.5″ don’t mess with me barrel)
Though I encourage them now, I would like to be able to arm trusted (and trained) members of my group who didn’t think about weapons or even prepping.
