Another year is in the bag, and as usual I am creating a list with the most popular posts published on The Survivalist Blog in 2010. Make sure to check them out just in case you missed
something from the past year, and a happy 2011 to every one!
10 Things To Do Now!
I’m sure most of you remember this post, it received 85 comments and generated a great buzz with readers. For those who don’t remember the post is essentially a shopping list of survival food and gear that you can find at any shopping center, such as Wal-Mart or Kmart.
Ten MORE Things To Do Now
As you might have guessed this post is a continuation of the post “10 Things to Do Now” post mentioned above. This one received an amazing 167 comments and was featured on Lewrockwell.com and linked to by a number of other sites.
100 Question Extravaganza
This one was huge with over 230 comments – by the time we had made it to the 100 question mark I felt like my head was going to explode, but it was a lot of fun and I feel like it helped a lot of people. I think we should start doing this once a month – what do you think.
How To Survive TEOTWAWKI In 14 Easy Steps
While this one did not get the same response from readers as the ones mentioned above, I think it is one of my better posts. The post details 14 suggestions to help you prepare for TEOTWAWKI (the end of the world as we know it) and I’m sure anyone following the steps listed will increase their survival rate after such an event.
Is Prepping Keeping You Poor?
One of the biggest frustrations expressed by readers is that they don’t have the money to prepare. As I’ve said before, you don’t have to be rich to prepare for disaster, you just have to plan smart.
Top 9 Mistakes Of Prepping Newbs
This post gives advice on nine of the most common mistakes that I see people making with their survival plans with tips on how to avoid them. I think it is ann essential post for those just starting out and it might even help some of you who have done this for a while.
6 Tips To Optimize Your Time For Prepping
After a lack of money, not having enough time is the second most common frustration expressed by readers here at The Survivalist Blog. This post gives advice on ways to get the most done with the least amount of time.
5 Tips to Get Your spouse On-Board for Your Preparedness Journey
Unfortunately, for many, the spouse isn’t supportive of our emergency preparedness efforts. I’ll never forget the reader who emailed me after her husband hauled her preps to the dump. If you are having trouble convincing your spouse that being prepared is a good this, this post could help.
Finding Like-Minded Survivalist Friends
This is another area where we tend to have a lot of frustrations, we feel like we are alone in our prepping. That is the reason, I wrote this post and started the survival meet up page. I hope it helps you find someone or even a group of friends.
5 Reasons You Might Fail As A Survivalist
The title of this says it all. I loved writing this post because it made me dig deep into my own mistakes and failures while prepping. We all make mistakes, even me but if we learn from those mistakes can they be considered failures? I don’t think so.
Top 10 Smart Ways to Build Your Food Storage
Need I say more.
What Do You Do When You’re Given The Deadline For Teotwawki?
This post gives advice on using a technique commonly refered to as mind mapping to find holes in your survival preps. This is one of my favorite posts, one because I think it has the potential to help a lot of people and two because it caused a lot of debate both on and off the blog that lead to the next post…
TEOTWAWKI: Vote Yes or No This Week Only
This post asked the simple question “what is the meaning of TEOTWAWKI” does it have to be a total Mad Max type of event or can it be a disaster on a smaller scale such as an economic collapse. With over 140 comments the response was overwhelming and clear.
Planning For New Arrivals Post-TEOTWAWKI
This post asks the question, “what would you do if unwanted visitors come to your door looking for a handout post collapse? Will you turn them away? Or will you pull the trigger if they refuse to leave?” Be sure to read the comments on this one.
There are many other posts that could have been included here but these are the ones that popped into my mind this morning. I hope you find this list useful as we go into the New Year.

M.D. have you noticed that some of the other shtf blogs are mirroring your content? What I mean is they are trying to copy your writing style and types of posts to attract more readers. It’s sad that they can’t think for themselves. When I noticed this was happening I unsubscribed from their blog.
#6 shot,
Ya, I’ve noticed it – but as they say “Imitation Is The Best Form Of Flattery” and I’d like to thank them for it.
I think there are far to many survival, prepping, shtf teotwawki, blogs popping up. It seem like there are new ones everyday and to be honest most of them suck rocks. Everyone is trying to score a buck and don’t care about readers that is why I love this site because MD his readers are so very helpful. This site is the best by a long shot.
Heather,
Thank you.
I’ll second Heather’s comment.
As regards the post, it was nice to revisit old articles and see if any of them changed how I did things, plus refresh my memory and help me refine various goals.
I also bought a book that someone mentioned in a comment: Into the Forest by Jean Hegland. It sounded intriguing, and at a single penny for a used copy, well worth a read.
I can’t speak of other blogs because I haven’t been to any of them. This was the first I stumbled across, and by the sounds of it, I was lucky enough to find the right one. I guess it was fate MD, my first decision about prepping led me straight to you.
Anyway, love the idea of a more regular question extravaganza. Lots of info to get from you and other comments. This shows that you truly care about passing knowledge to others. To dedicate that time and effort to be personable, rather than just churning out a post and tuning out until the next one, is what keeps us all reading.
Kudos to you sir, on a job well done!
Happy New Year and Peace to all of you.
I once saw a study on this very subject back in the mid 90s. The outcome showed that it was cheaper to feed them than it was to kill them. The paradigm has changed a bit from then to now. Cant say what I would do until the time comes, I can say that it would make a huge difference if I new then over if I did not. Im a very charitable person when I can be but I also know in crisis situations, one must be very carefull not to expose yourself and let people know what all you have. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! even tho it porbly wont be, I refuse to let the commies ruin my fun!
It’s hard to say which one was my favorite, probably “Planning for new arrivals”?
Congratulations on a successful 2010, can’t wait to see what 2011 brings for you!
M.D. I would like to thank you and everyone else who comments on here.
As you know from my last post we were snowed in for a while and cold -18 for a few nights and we were fine.
Well on christmas eve we lost our water and it is still not on,freezing temps and burst pipes dont go well together. We have been told it might be back on next week sometime. There have been thousands of homes with no water.
Since I found your blog I have been prepping and trying to get ready for what everlife throws at us and getting great ideas.Well life through a few things at us over the last month, but it was okay.
So when our water stopped flowing without any warning we were prepared. We have plenty of water stored, Portable toilet in the shed, Hand santizers, Bleach, Garbage bags, Paper Plates, Bowls, Napkins.
Also bucket with plunger to wash the few clothes that needed to be washed
We have everything we need without having to go out, think my husband was very impressed that I was so well prepared. He was on board but now even more. So once we have water back, and things
are back to normal I will replace everything we have used plus more.
I suppose I could look at this as a trial run of what could be if things got bad. Also I know what things I need to get more of, plus you never ever can have to much water. That will be top on our list, to store more.
So when people come on here and say nothing is going to happen, everything is okay. Why do you prep.
I didnt think 7 weeks ago i would need my preps so soon.
So a BIG thank you to you and everyone else for all the information and ideas. That I was so well prepared.
Looking forward to more ideas this year.
Happy New Year everyone.
Denise, you are a living testament to the wisdom of being prepared. Glad you were ready, but so sorry you had such terrible weather for so long. Let’s hope 2011 is a better year for all of us. Happy New Year, and may God Bless you and your husband.
Thank you Lint Picker.
Denise, I was wondering how you were doing without the water!
It just goes to show that preps are never wasted.
Glad you’re OK, and hope the water is restored soon.
I notice you said about the paper plates – I don’t have any of these, and now could be a good time to stock up in the New Year sales or at Makro, so I think it would be a good idea for me to get some.
Jean so glad I had them got the idea of here. Also if we are only having a sandwich, we just use a sheet of paper towel as not to waste a plate. You dont realise how much water you need when you dont have it running freely. It as really made us think about better storage and having alot more water on hand.
How is the dehydrator going was thinking of getting one.
Denise
We had the same thing happen here. The thing I didn’t get, we had a heavy snow fall then we couldn’t use the water due to bacteria? What ever, it was a great test for my preps and did find some areas I needed to improve. Glad your ok!
Forgor to say all the posts are my favourite.
Denise
Can’t say I have any favorite topics, but I do know there are some that elicit more responses from others as well as from myself. I really enjoy the comments and the info, insights, and ideas within those comments. The combination of great topics from MD and some guest writers and the remarkable readers who frequent this blog make it the best survival-related blog on the web.
M.D. I enjoy all of them too, but I liked the question and answer post.
What I would like to see is more on guns. Best of, etc. I always feel like the gunshops see us coming. I never know if I am being sold junk or not as it is fairly obvious we are not experts or even close.
Judith. You do not need to be an expert to buy a gun as much as you do not need to be an expert to buy a car. You just need to know what you want and why and what fits you and your budget.Just don`t let some salesman or woman sell you something that you do not want or never had the desire to own just beacus they want to sell you something in their inventory. When I was a small boy my mom bought a new 67 mustang. She wanted a new cougar but some lot lizzard sold her the mustang. The comision was higher on that mustang then the cougar so the lizzard steered her to the mustang.Don`t let that happen to you with gun purchases. Steve
The Ten and Ten More were, for 2010, and still are, for 2011, my favorites. What a way to kick off the new year, M.D. My camo hat goes off to you. What an honor it must have been, may still be, that the second Ten was featured on LewRockwell. So glad to have such a unique site as yours to visit. What a blessing it is to me and other readers. (Lifting my glass of survival juice to all of you)-”To 2011!”
