We’ve all seen those lists – you know the top 250 survival blogs type blogs / websites. The lists that I’ve read are mostly just random listings in no particular order and with no real structure in regards to the “top blogs” in the field.
Well in this top survival blog / sites list, I’m not going to list 250 blogs, only five – this list will be based on several factors including Alexa rank, back links and average number of comments on each post.
Okay here we go…
1. SHTF Plan - yep, even though JWR likes to claim that his site is number one in the Alexa ranking and that no one else even comes close – he isn’t.
SHTF Plan Alexa rank 24,348, sites linking 3,435 in Google page rank 5, Average number of comments per post 200+.
2. And in second place SurvivalBlog.com – Alexa traffic rank 28,293, sites linking in 2,737, Google page rank 5, Average number of comments 0.
3. The Survival Podcast – Alexa traffic rank 38,008, sites linking in 1,032, Google page rank 4, Average number of comments 15.
4. The Survivalist blog.net – Alexa traffic rank 71,055, sites linking in 939, Google page rank 5, Average number of comments 50.
5. Survival Cache – Alexa traffic rank 88,188, sites linking in 459, Google page rank 4, Average number of comments 10.
Well there you have it – the top five survival blog sites that are listed in order as based on traffic rank, Google page rank and reader interaction according to my research.
What do YOU think?

M.D.: Still out of all the sites out there, I think you run a good one. This is where I spend to majority of my “blog time”. I do visit the others, but I usually only run through them looking for something specific.
i agree with JP
Don’t let the rankings fool ya. I prefer this site to most of those others. Better tips, articles and DIY info. Keep up the good work.
TOTO,
Thank you – the sites were not listed by quality of content (but they each have loads to offer) but on the different ranking factors listed…
the only one I really check out…the others…not really…more like minded folks here…thanks again M D for a great site..
+1,000,000
I only go to MY number one!
Oh, I forgot to say, I’m here now.
this is my number1 also.
Hunker-Down,
No stats can judge that – and that is the #1 “stat” to consider when choosing which blogs to read. Different folks are looking for different things…
Also, I did not list the number of subscribers for each blog because I have no way of knowing that information for sure – but I do know that we have nearly 13,000 subscribers and folks reading our posts in their rss / email are not counted by Alexa or Google in stats.
So if we took subscribers into consideration the numbers could be different…
You did good MD, you put a lot of work into this site. I have learned “loads” here and I think given some good advice now and again. It is a good thing for like minded people to get a handle on things and talk out what they need to talk out. I like the other sites but this is the only one I ever make comments on. Thanks again.
I do subscribe to others but I love this format and respectful exchange of information without an extremeist agenda. Most of all the people who participate on this blog are absolutely phenomenal. All of this is skillfully orchestrated by our moderator, Mr. M.D. Creekmore. Thank you, Sir, for making this possible.
Ditto!
Double-ditto. Thanks M.D. & Pack.
I wake up early each morning waiting for you to post. Sometimes I sit and sit and sit because it is most likely 2AM left coast time.
So to keep myself from going bonkers I go to other sites and in doing so it makes me appreciate this one even more. Newsy but homey.
I go to Rawles site because of his odds and sods and will read an article if it seem to catch my eye.
SHTF Plan is slow in uploading new articles but find it interesting.
Haven’t gone to the other two.
But anyway M.D. if you happen to get up extra early some morning put the stuff up. I will probably be up waiting.
I love this site. It is #1 in my book! Well done MD!
-Blue
This is by far the best of all the sites. I find regular updates here. Many others are just stagnant, with pitiful content and slow updates. I am here every day, though lurking and reading, seldom posting comments.
Keep up the good work.
M.D. You have the friendliest folks!! Takes a lot of coool to belong to the Pack!!!
tsb is still my number one hit in the morning.
Keep up the good work MD.
I’m one who is not “counted” because I do almost all my reading on Google Reader.
You’re number one on my list because you appear to be a kind and caring person. Kind and caring people attract other kind and caring people making this a refreshing site to visit – not to mention I always learn something.
250 and ranked #4 (at least) and #1 in my book.
I recommend you to every prepper or ‘prepper-curious’ I encounter.
I think you’re doing great MD. Congrats.
Here’s my top 5, according to FeedDemon’s “Feeds I Pay Most Attention:”
1. The Daily Sheeple
2. @TheSurvivalistBlog.net
3. DARK AGES AMERICA
4, Club Orlov
5. Sixbears in the Woods
I stopped looking for sites when I found this one, and this is the only one I check into regularly and the only one I comment on. Besides… where else are you gonna find a motorcross ridding momma dusting up a state trooper and thrusting a report card in his face LOL
I’m not looking for a highly rated site…Don’t want to chat with the world.
How many of the 200+ comments are people flapping their lips? The Wolf Pack offers little comedy, personal experience, which is invaluable in my book, ideas, and more, plus a very friendly group that’s more like family. I read this blog several times a day and night, for updates on comments. In my book…I’m reading the best site…
Thank you M.D. and the entire Wolf Pack….
Lynn,
Anything below 100,000 ranking by Alexa is very, very good.
Agreed… I also like the fact that MD doesn’t post 12 articles a day unlike another site. Time is precious… and I just don’t have the time to try and follow along with that many posts each and every day.
SW,
I keep it at around 2-3 per day during the week…
Which is pretty much perfect. It gives us variety on a daily basis and also makes sure you don’t depleate your stock of submitted articles **thumbs up**
I don’t use the Alexa toolbar. I use the sparky Firefox add-on instead.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/alexa-sparky/
Let’s you know quickly each sites rank as you surf the net…
The Survivalist Blog is #1 in my mind. Love the Wolf Pack! You are to be congratulated for an excellent site, M. D.!
Here’s my thoughts:
#1 just looked at it and just scared me, makes me think I’m done for.
#2 long boring and no comments to hear from real people.
#3 never been there, will look later
#4 best there is…good leader, good people=good information
#5 took a quick look and it didn’t make me want to stay.
I may be biased MD, but your site has it all!
Your site is in my top 5. I learn as much from the comments as I do from the articles. Being older I’m not much into combat gear or bugging out into the wilderness. I guess I’m more of the homestead mentality. Love posts on gardening and canning.
Jackie
I’m definitely there with you on the homestead mentality. You can buy all the gear and goods in the world.. but eventually you’re gonna have to restock. Thus better to be homesteading and restocking on a regular basis from stuff you produce.
Wow! Pack, So much good info here. I know I looked at a few other sites (don’t remember which ones, sorry) and have not been back to them. I get so-o-o-o many tidbits of great ideas in the comments that have lead me to books, items to buy, things that I would never thought of that I need to do…the list goes one. Great work M.D.. and thank you.
This is just a top notch site bar none…I dont waste my time “nettin” when I have this site with all the experienced military, preppers, survivalists and other sharp-as-a-tack readers and sharers…nuff said
I like this site the best because it it real people doing real things, not so overwhelmed with articles on weapons and you could not find a more friendly community! That’s the key – community. We may be from all over but we are a community.
IMHO, #4 and #5 in this list are my #1 and #2.
Again, IMO, the #1 and 2 listed are more difficult to navigate and find specific categories, and to me read more to a different ‘slant’ from my perspective.
There are very few “authentic” survival/prepper sites, and IMHO, this one is the best. I have visited ALOT of them. I do get email updates from a few sites, just in case I missed something, but I’ve found most of the other survival/prepper sites contain mostly links to info on other websites…nothing original, and often the comment sections are empty.
Keep up the great work, M.D.
When I was first introduced to prepping, I was told to go to the #2 site. Of course I thought, ‘im just plain dead’. I came upon this site and realized there is away to survive. Thank you Mr. M D. I highly recommend you to the curious. #1 all the way! God bless the Pack! And the US of A.
Sirvivr2010,
Thank you. We try to keep it real…
This site does a GOOD JOB of keeping it real. The Pack is amazing and thus why I am still around reading, learning, and chatting.
You are the best!, and I think I have visited everyone out there. I have learned more common sense and economical tips for prepping than anywhere else. Any products you offer are chock-full of advice and reasonably priced, After discovering this site a few years ago you quickly rose to the first spot in my “survival internet folder” and ain’t nobody coming close to knocking you off. Thanks for your dedication. I know it must be difficult to keep it going everyday.
TnMike,
Thank you sir – it’s good to hear from another Volunteer!
And a Plateau resident too! Hard to find a better place to live on a few acres and learn a self sufficient lifestyle.
TnMike,
Yep.
I like this one best because you can read everyone’s comments and they keep it civil and funny, and your advice is affordable to follow. SHTFplan is kind of more doomer, Rawles is OK but assumes you have lots of money, but I’ve met his editor so I like to read it anyway. There are some neat articles, some are economical – he had one article in his armor archives on homemade plate carriers that I read after sewing mine. I have no experience with the rest of those sites, but enjoy the public area of alpharubicon.com sometimes. They are very focused on practical stuff, but don’t post a whole lot (maybe if I became one of their members I’d see more articles).
Penny Pincher,
I thought he (Rawles) was the editor?
His “editor at large” is Michael Z. Williamson, the sci fi author. Nice guy, and he also makes super nice knives. I really must get one of his books and read it.
I have several other author friends actually – not sure how that happened, it’s not like I was even trying. One friend of mine just published a book on solar flares and another just came out with one on King Arthur. Two other friends write in that Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter type genre, one friend is writing a book about an undead lady cop, and one of my cousins was trying to do NaNoWriMo the other year but I don’t know what she was writing. My mom wrote a book on one room schoolhouses and is working on turning her journals into a book, and another friend of mine wrote a book about the Real ID Act. I also have artists and musicians in the family. I’m a musician/composer.
I worry that when the SHTF none of that talent will do us any good, although I did read a Selco story once about some guy who got made into some gang’s minstrel and survived the siege of Sarajevo that way.
I’d like to take a moment to point out something. While some may not give it a second thought… it speaks volumes to me and I noticed it right off the bat.
MD decided to make a post ’bout the best survival sites out there. He COULD have just made a post that stated he was #1. Kinda like how both Ford and Chevy claim they have the #1 selling truck in America.
But instead MD showed character, morals, and integrity and posted the truth according to where the chips fell. Just so happens this wonderful site fell at #4 and not in the top 3. So be it…
MD, I’m sure I probably can speak for most of the Pack when I say…. Thank you for being that man. For being honest when honesty did not show you as the top dog (according to the rankings). In our book… honesty, integrity, and morals will always make you the Top Dog.
For MD and the Pack… keep up the good work on producing the best site out there. I learn just as much from the comments as I do from the articles.
SW,
Thank you sir – I’m not going to claim to be #1 by the ranking when I’m not, I know some folks do (you know who you are) but, I’m not that guy.
Yours is the only one for me! Friendly pack and honorable leader, just doesn’t get better than that!
I told a friend of mine about your amazon button today. She shops there all the time. She’s going to try to remember to go through you to them….me too; although I don’t buy much from them.
Petticoat Prepper,
That would be great – thank you both.
Ditto JP in MT. This website is user friendly, not high brow, practical, and succint. Oh, and also feels like family!
I love this site. And am sharing it all with my daughter in law. Best site around and I am thankful to have found you and the pack. Keep on keeping on, please.
This is the only site we subscribe to after checking out other ones a few months ago. We want information to help us survive today as well as when TSHTF. If what we are looking for is not listed this week we can go to the Archives and find it. People here love their pets as family. We can relate to that. This site is like having friends visiting around the kitchen table or on the porch sharing helpful information, their problems and their happiness. Thanks everyone!!!
There are other sites? Really MD this is the first blog I look at in the morning and the last one I look at night. I can pick an article here and there on other sites, but this site has, IMHO, consistanly higher quality of articles and posts from members. Thank you for your continued hard work.
Keep the Faith
Dear Mr. Creekmore,
I’m not a blogger, but first time for everything. I was literally drowning out there when I first became interested in prepping 7 months ago. I read through Arthur Bradley’s Disaster Preparedness For The Family. It had some good basic info, but knew by then I wanted more. But let me back up a bit. I live on the gulf coast of Florida. We lived through hurricane Ivan & many other smaller category hurricanes in my life. This past year when a small hurricane was originally headed our way, we filled the gas cans, checked the 2 generators, dug out the lanterns/flashlights & boarded up the windows. The next stop was the grocery store. I found myself wandering through the store with gallon containers of water in my grocery cart. Suddenly, I felt so vulnerable and unprepared. Had no idea what type of food to purchase. I felt very anxious and abruptly left the store with my water I purchased. As I arrived home, I spent some quiet time attempting to figure out what in the heck just happened in that store. Suddenly, it came to me. I had no for thought or plan of action. In the past, we would just load up on groceries and snack food knowing with in a few days everything would return to normal. That was until Ivan devastated Pensacola.
Okay, long story to get to this point. Bought & read the Arthur Bradley book & began my journey. I was floundering. There was so much info. out there, I became overwhelmed. I had awakened from my long winter’s nap and realized there was much more to do than stock my grocery shelves.
At this point, still remained confused with so much info.(some contradictory) out there. I looked up a web site suggested in a book and began reading. Did print off some valuable forms for organization & planning. However, just could not organize or decide where to begin.
Then I accidentally stumbled on to your website when I typed in survivalist instead of survival and bingo! I can tell you what a difference your info., all the shared info. from the Pack & your book “31 Days” has made in my life.
I have so much left to do & prepare, but this has given me a great start. I personally don’t need any other website. Besides, I peeked at them tonight and must say they are not reader friendly. Love your website! We always strive to be #1, but I remind the nurses I work with often that quality work is key. Thank you for being there when I needed guidance & God bless you for what you do. Also, I thank the Wolf Pack for my continuing education.
PS: Just received your DVD today & off work tomorrow. Can’t wait to check it out.
Thanks again,
Southern Girl
+1
survivalblog has loads and loads of information, unfortunately, you can’t get away from ‘King Rawles’ inputting his opinions all over the articles…whatever…bad with the good or something like that. Personally, I’m home here with the Pack.
I checked out other sites, and none compare to this place. You have the best site on the internet.
Circumstances haven’t allowed me to comment and participate as much as I would like lately – but I at least skim over the articles and comments nearly every day. There is only one other site I ever really go to and I go to it so seldom I can’t even remember the name of it – I have to check my history each time. The reason I go there is to ask specific questions. Sometime the question I have doesn’t relate to the topic at hand on this blog and I don’t want to disrupt the conversation.
Overall – I have learned so much from this site! This has been my pre-school, kindergarten and I feel like maybe I’m about ready to graduate to first grade – and the people here are so warm, helpful and well…interesting. (I mean that in a very good way) and I can’t believe how many more have joined since I started here!
I’m just grateful for your work M.D. and for the people who attend this online group. Thanks.
I love MD’s and HomeINsteader’s site! J/K LOL.
I go to JWR’s site for “Odds ‘n Sods” and investment links every few days but I’m here everyday. This site is interactive and awesome. I’m very thankful for the amount of moderation MD has to put into it in between gathering eggs, chopping wood and preparing meals. Thank you, MD.
You are right M.D. they are all good blogs all serve a good purpose .But I find I come here first all the time because of you and the rest of the Pack and I only comment on this one blog. Keep up the good work.
This is my #1 – I check the news and always read the articles. I just love the pack and learn every time I click in. In fact, when I stumbled upon this blog I began to prep in earnest; I didn’t feel crazy or weird. It’s just time, and the very first guideline that made sense to me was the “10 Things You Can Do Right Now”. Thanks, MD. Appreciate you, Pack!
I’m new to the survival genre and I’m seeing the need to be informed and prepared. As far as blogs/sites go, I like SHTF Plan but it looks like the survivalistblog is gaining grown and fast!
Mr. Creekmore:
My wife and I have been married for over 50 years and much of it has been spent “being prepared”. I was born shortly after the depression and both of my parents were of the depression mentality meaning that it could happen again and they wanted to be ready for it if it happened. I and my sister, who was born in 1942, grew up with that mindset. My 2 younger sisters got interested in survival about a year ago and asked me if we were ready in case of a disaster of some kind. when I answered in the affirmative they expressed concern about my sister because she said that she didn’t think anything was going to happen and asked me to talk with her. I did. My sister has several hundred quarts of vegetables that she canned herself which she rotates regularly,as well as other things( too numerous to mention) to enable her to survive, all of which she does as a matter of course. To her and to me, for that matter, take survivalability as a daily thing, without giving it a lot of thought. We do not want to have to be a burden on society so we have prepared.
In 1965, we went on a 6 wwek “work stoppage” and only went to the grocery store twice, both times because our 4 kids asked if we could get some fresh milk, as they were tired of reconstituted powdered milk. It was a treat, not a necessity.
I found your web-site about 2 weeks ago and have been a daily reader as you and you commenters are more of the type of people ttat I am. I am not a “Doom and Gloom” type of person but I do believe that one must be prepared for any eventuality. I have visited some other survival web-sites and of all of them, I have found way too many of them are people that only think of the end of the world, not teotwawki as being the loss of an income or a natural disaster somewhere. Just be yourselves and carry on as I have found you to be and I will be a daily reader. This my first comment on any web-site so please forgive me if I have overstepped my bounds . Ron
Welcome to the Pack, Ron! Thanks for sharing your story. You’re absolutely right about being prepared for any eventuality. That’s what it’s all about. It should be an everyday thing for everybody.
Ron:
If I may..Welcome!
Prepping can be a fun and exciting way to change your world view for the positive. Groceries are not going to get cheaper, so making what you have go farther and last longer is a good thing. Having family that you can work along side is a blessing I have yet to experience.
I think you will find that expressing your thoughts here, in a positive/non-vindictive manner, will always be welcome. New and old, we all have something worth sharing. And when another comes to understand, that in itself is a victory.
Ron,
Welcome. Any insite you can bring to the pack is welcome. Join in.
A quick note: this weekend there is no Alabama State sales tax for prepping gear.
The ranking is really only important to the advertisers and the person running the blog or the blog owners. (Also it is important to some ego’s)..
So to me the ranking is really no bug deal.
I truly think the real bottom line of each blog / site, is to make MONEY and fame, and sell product for there advertisers. The quest of the almighty dollar. Just an other business, But also to spread the word with good intentions..
My how the web has changed the world. I am an older guy compared to most here I think?
And I think many blogs/sites are all helpful in there own way. I visit a lot of blog/sites, but I have boiled it down to about 10 regulars.
And I am a big lurker. It is nice way to learn a lot. And get different options.
((And there is no intention to make any one mad or stir up any controversy with my comments.))
Yes it is nice to say that this may be my favorite blog and I like the people.
The ideas are openly exchange. I am also Just glad be in (America where we can choose what we view and say for now??)
One last thing.. do the people really get to vote on the site or blogs..
Or does it go buy the (Computer Numbers), the returns, log in’s, returning log on ect..) google and other companies records I bet that is the way..
That kinda sucks I do not trust google and most of the larger web companies..
But that is the way the system is run for now!
It would be nice to see if there was a people vote.. but it would be hard to control. Kinda like the way we vote now.. There be fraud everywhere…Kinda (hard to control).
Whops did not mean to bring politics into the subject…
Now I am back on the feds.. watch list….O well
Enough rambling out of me,, take care pack. Enjoy your life..
And good job on the blog MD and supporters.
I have been reading for many years.. And will continue to..
This is an excellent site with a great bunch of people, BUT also so are the other four sites / blogs that MD mentioned..
Just my 20 cents long winded…
Take Care All
