  1. I liken the current state of the economy to a very large ship going downstream at full speed towards a falls; you must slow it down, them turn it around, then you can start getting things moving in the right direction. It will be getting closer to the falls the whole time. The question is, do we have enough time to get this done?

There’s still lots of poison ivy, etc., out there. If you happen to be in an area where there is fall color, beware of all that red – it may well be poison ivy, poison oak, or poison sumac (they turn beautiful shades of red in the fall!).

And I had no idea that Fels Naptha soap could remove the urushiol oil! It’s tons cheaper than some of the “specialty products” for this purpose. — Homeinsteader

Poison Ivy, Oak, and Sumac Myths and Facts

    1. The rash is contagious. MYTH

Fact: The rash is derived from urushiol oil secreted from poison ivy, oak, and sumac. The rash is not contagious but urushiol oil can be spread if not removed by washing.

    2. Scratching and popping blisters will spread the rash. MYTH

Fact: The rash is not caused by the fluid in the blisters, it is a reaction to the urushiol oil. As long as the oil is removed it cannot be spread.

    3. You’re either allergic or you’re not. MYTH

Fact: Your allergic reaction to poison ivy can develop, increase, and decrease from year-to-year, even if you’ve never had it before.

    4. You can catch the rash by standing near the plants. MYTH

Fact: Direct contact with urushiol oil is the only way you can be affected. While you cannot catch poison ivy by simply standing near the plants, there is an exception: if the oil goes airborne which can happen in a fire or if the plants are run over with a lawn mower.

    5. Leaves of three, let them be. MYTH

Fact: This is only true for poison ivy. Poison oak can have between three and five leaves while poison sumac has between seven and 13.
    Prevention Through Identification

    Poison Ivy Treatment

Prevent reactions altogether whenever possible by educating yourself and avoiding exposure.

Look at the above photo and be familiar with poison ivy, oak, and sumac so you can identify and avoid contact. Remember that poison ivy always has three leaves, poison oak has between three and five, and poison sumac between seven and 13.

When in areas of known growth, wear long clothing.

If you do come in contact, using soap and cool water to wash the urushiol oil off your body, clothes, shoes (and any other affected surfaces) as soon after exposure as possible will help you prevent the rash. Using cool water will keep your pores closed and slow your skin’s absorption of the urushiol oil. It’s debatable how soon the oil needs to be washed off to avoid the rash, some say 30 minutes, others say several hours. What is known is that you want to remove the oil as soon as possible.

If you already have the rash, read on and try the solution that worked for me, or one of the other solutions listed below.
    Successful Treatment of Poison Ivy

Fels Naptha soap, Everclear ethyl alcohol, and tea tree oil.

Note: Fels Naptha has some unnatural ingredients; see list below. If you’re uncomfortable with this soap, don’t use it. An alternative is Burt’s Bees Poison Ivy Soap and I’ve listed its ingredients further down in this article.

I use Fels Naptha because it’s better at removing the oil, stopping the itch, and drying the rash than anything else I’ve tried. I have studied the ingredients and know they’re not all natural, but since I’m not leaving it on my skin, I’m comfortable using it in this application (use and rinse off immediately) the handful of times I get poison ivy each year. If you feel different please try a natural alternative. Two ingredients (underlined below) are banned for use in cosmetics but are still used in “leave-on” applications like antiperspirant/deodorant. I would NOT recommend using and leaving on skin.

I believe Fels Naptha works so well in this application because it is made to remove oil based stains (like urushiol oil).

Ingredients: soap (sodium tallowate*, sodium cocoate* (or) sodium palmate kernelate*, and sodium palmate*), water, talc, coconut acid*, palm acid*, tallow acid*, PEG-6 methyl ether, glycerin, sorbitol, sodium chloride, pentasodium pentetate and/or tetrasodium etidronate, titatium dioxide, fragrance, Acid Orange (CI 20170), Acid yellow 73 (CI 43350).
*contains one or more of these ingredients

Here’s how to best apply the treatment:

immediately launder any and all clothing that may have come in contact with urushiol oil (our homemade laundry detergent works great)
use Fels Naptha soap and water to remove any urushiol oil from any door knobs, tools, surfaces, etc.
remove any urushiol oil from your body by taking a shower and applying the Fels Naptha to all affected areas and rinsing off
scrub the affected areas with a toothbrush or washcloth to pop the blisters
dry off and apply our antiseptic homemade deodorant to all affected areas (made of 4 oz. Everclear ethyl grain alcohol and 40 drops tea tree essential oil)
reapply antiseptic homemade deodorant once every hour until rash dries up and begins to disappear.

You should see results within a few hours.

Using this treatment dried up my poison ivy overnight!
    Other Treatments

While these treatments were less successful for me, they have worked for many others in the past and may work for you.

Many have had success using jewelweed. My experience was that it helped relieve the itch but did nothing to help dry up the blistering rash.

    Rhus Toxicodendron

Rhus Toxicodendron is a homeopathic remedy commonly taken in 30C dosages of five pellets. I tried this for three days without success. This works great for many but I recommend consulting your Naturopathic/Homeopathic Doctor so you can administer the best individual dosage for treatment.

    Burt’s Bees Poison Ivy Soap

This is an all natural soap that many have success with; I had success using this soap (and applying the homemade deodorant) but the results took three days. If you are concerned about using Fels Naptha, try this instead. It didn’t work near as quick for me, but was still effective so I encourage you to try it.

Ingredients: vegetable soap base, kaolin, avena sativa (oat) kernel protein, melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree) leaf oil, pinus palustris (pine) wood tar, impatiens balsamina (jewelweed) extract.
    Trial and Error

Understand that not everyone will have the same experience.

The best solution for you may be different from mine, and different from the next guy. This is normal because we all have different levels of exposure, different skin types, different allergic reactions, etc.

Try the treatment that sounds best to you and see if it works. If not, try something else until you find what works best for you.

  5. I have already seen prototypes & working production drones with tasers , and firearms.Several companies are working on missles sized just for drones as well! But the real scary stuff is on the way, micro drones smaller than toys , some insect size , with listening and video on board, some are even bombs themselves! No one would be safe from a swarm of several thousand insect sized guided or even self guided bombs made just for a single person. This ‘new’ technology must be regulated and we must watch the regulaters. The thought of autonomus hunter/killers engaging targets
that they deem appropriate should scare the heck out of anyone that has ever seen a sci-fi movie. When the machines become ‘smarter’ than people the slaves will revolt! Keep an eye on how the courts rule these drones are a clear threat to privacy and more.

    • Yup, I saw a few programs about the insect-sized drones. How ’bout if we all get a couple of those battery-operated tennis-racket-like bug zappers.
Once they get those little drones operational, methinks they’ll start off with spying on the drug dealers, etc. But when they run out of real criminals . . .

  6. How can the president or congress enact laws that violate the constitution? These rights are inalienable we cannot forfeit them even if we want to.Whether for safety or security ,we cannot allow it.

    • Take the number of people who are aware and care and compare them to the number of people who won’t read anything with sentences composed of actual words, the number of people stupid enough to trust the government, the number of people who don’t care about any news that isn’t in the Weekly World News or on TV, the number of people too self involved to see anything outside their greed, the number of people that believe the lies called campaign promises. Now put them on opposite sides of a scale. Guess which side is larger?

Think Congress cares what the people think or about the Constituition? All they care about is bending over for the highest bidder like good little whores so they can keep their place at the trough.

Things like honor, patriotism, self reliance, common sense and even manners are dying, kept alive only by the people on that lighter side of the scale.

“A dying culture invariably exhibits personal rudeness. Bad manners. Lack of consideration for others in minor matters. A loss of politeness, of gentle manners, is more significant than is a riot…”
      ― Robert A. Heinlein

  7. I didn’t turn into a full fledged prepper until last year, but I did know of the abuses of government power for a few decades. I watched as more and more police officers got indoctrinated, brain washed, into thinking that the government knows best. I’m ashamed to think that I was nearly taken in, but I was able to keep my sanity. Fortunately, there are many good cops out there who aren’t taken in. Unfortunately or fortunately, depending on your point of view, those who are taken in are mostly big city cops, not your deputies or small town officers.

The more I learn about Obama, the more I think about this election coming up, the more scared I get. Obama has deliberately targeted anyone who is conservative and doesn’t agree with his agenda in his executive orders. He works by divide and conquer and so many Americans don’t see it and many simply don’t care. They like the Nanny State envisioned by liberals, but the Nanny State eliminates self-reliance and gives way to onerous regulations. I don’t believe that Romney can turn this economy around nor do I agree with all he believes, but one thing I do know: the man prays and he believes in self-reliance.

My wife is an Aussie. In Australia they had the gun amnesty act of 1996. Only honest citizens turned in their weapons. Gun violence is on the rise and it is associated with drugs and gangs. In Sydney alone, gun violence has risen 20% this year and the government is powerless to stop it. Their solution? More useless laws. The people there have been lulled into believeing that the government knows best, but what they have is severe regulation and rising crime. Did you know that there actually is a law on the books in Australia that tells you how to get into a truck? No joke! They have actually legislated how to climb into your truck. This is what we are headed for.

The only way to fight this is by being united in purpose and voice. I don’t care if you believe in God or not, but if you believe in your freedom, if you believe in self-reliance, then get out and vote. Apathy is one of the worst diseases known to man. Talk to other people about the problems. Don’t come across as a wild eyed fanatic or any type of fanatic for that matter. Use reason and logic and facts, but get out and talk. You still have that Constitutional right. The government doesn’t have minders everywhere you go…yet.

    • SurvivorDan says:

“The government doesn’t have minders everywhere you go…yet.” Indeed. More public cameras every year and more control of the internet. Interactive cameras on lap tops. GPS in cars. Got your phone on you – THEY know where you’re at and have been. Administrative subpoenas, Patriot Act, selective prosecution by the Justice Dept., brain washing school children etc. How long until children inform/rat on their parents ‘seditious’ speech or activities?
      Can’t happen? Read history.

      Rant attack! I’ll go quietly……

If you know the Word of Holy G-d, you know exactly what this means:
Obama Authorizes Joint Military Exercises With Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood

    Equipping Egypt to attack Israel?

Just days after a report that the U.S. was sharply cutting its participation in a military exercise scheduled with Israel, U.S. planes landed in Egypt Tuesday for a joint exercise, the first since the fall of Hosni Mubarak. Code-named “Eagle Arena 2012,” the exercise will include air and naval forays by US and Egyptian planes and boats, over the country, Sinai, and the Red Sea.

Barack Hussein Obama – a man of “Miracles”

    2 Corinthians 11:
13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder! For satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works.

  11. Homeinsteader says:

Well, I was so proud for a moment there…my veggie babies were looking great…just seeded them out 10 days ago, then went out and found SOME of them lying on the surface of the garden, cut at the base…and found me a cutworm, too. He’s history. But I also have several that have wilted from underground, so, that tells me the larvae has been eating the roots of my “babies”.

I treated the soil (horrors! the ‘treatment’ was not organic, but very effective!) and just went out to check; no indications of new infestation above-ground, but a few babies are still wilting and dropping. So, I sprinkled Diatomaceous Earth all around. That should do it, I would think.

And then I found these organic recipes for critter control. Think I’ll give them a try next.

Organic Garden Pest Control Recipe #1

    1 head of garlic
1 tablespoon dish soap (note: do not use a dish soap that contains bleach)
2 tablespoons mineral or vegetable oil
    2 cups water
Peel the garlic cloves and puree the cloves along with the oil and water. Allow to sit over night and then strain the mixture. Add the soap and mix toughly. Pour into a spray bottle and use on pest infected plants.

Organic Garden Pest Control Recipe #2

    1 tablespoon vegetable oil
    2 tablespoons baking soda
1 teaspoon dish soap or Murphy Oil (note: do not use a dish soap that contains bleach)
    2 quart of water
Combine ingredients and pour into a spray bottle. Use this organic bug spray for plants on your affected plants.

Organic Garden Pest Control Recipe #3

1/2 cup chopped hot peppers (the hotter the better)
    2 cups water
2 tablespoons dish soap (note: do not use a dish soap that contains bleach)
Puree peppers and water. Let sit overnight. Strain carefully (this will burn your skin) and mix in dish soap. Pour into a spray bottle and spray this organic bug spray for plants on your buggy plants.

Natural home pesticides are exactly like chemical pesticides in one very important way. Organic bug spray for plants will kill any bug it comes in contact with, whether a pest bug or a beneficial bug. It is always best before mixing up any natural insect repellent recipes to think hard how much damage pests are really doing to your garden.
You may be doing more damage to your plants by killing the bugs than the bugs were doing to your plants.

Do YOU have an organic or natural pest control recipe you have found effective? If so, would you mind sharing? Thank you!
