West Texas Land

by M.D. Creekmore on October 16, 2009

Yesterday, a reader asked my option on the suitability of west Texas as a retreat area, since I’ve never been to west Texas I can’t give a first hand opinion – maybe some of you can help me out in this regard:

M.D.,

I live in Kentucky but love Texas ever since I spent several months there in my teens. I noticed a lot of 5 & 10 acre tracks in West Texas for sale on eBay cheap – some under $500. I figure it’s just a rip off but I thought you or some readers in the area might give me some insight. Thanks a lot, GF

The first thing I would do before buying land off ebay would be to contact the tax accessor for that area they can give you the name of the person or company who owns the land then contact the owner to confirm the legitimacy listing.

If anyone lives in the the west Texas area or has experience buying property through ebay please share with us in the comments below.

Brad, you must own land around Sierra Blanca. I own 40 acres down there. Well water is possible (havent have one drilled yet) Is my camping/ shooting land for now. Some travel trailers in the area, road accesible and less than an hour from El Paso (a major city). Bought it for 30K for 40 Acres, owner financed.

What “they” are calling West Texas is all near the Rio Grande and the border with Mexico. Hasn’t anyone heard of the horrific mindless violence of the Mexican Drug Cartels? It’s out of control and evidently the politicians and sheriffs are powerless. Or bought and sold. And just look at the pictures. It’s flat desert. I really feel sorry if someone is trying to come from up north to “seek their fortune.” Newsflash. There is nothing out there. Rocks, cactus, scorpions, snakes, sand, no trees, it’s flat. For miles and miles. That’s what you will find. Miles and miles of flat desert covered in rocks, cactus and dangerous critters. There’s no water. The Rio Grande is a big dangerous river that goes right down into Mexico. Not a friendly place. I wouldn’t go there. I’d never survive. The winter winds versus the scalding sun. Which is worse. I wouldn’t buy 10 acres in “west Texas” for 10 cents. Loose any fantasies. They don’t exist.
