What Are Your Preparedness Goals for February?

by M.D. Creekmore on February 9, 2010

Readers of The Survivalist Blog are goal oriented. We look at our situation, we plan, set and complete our goals until finished, then we do it all over again. It’s a never ending circle, setting goals and following through allows us to be better prepared for disaster.
What I want you to do today is  – imagine the worst type of collapse or disaster (this will be different depending on the individual) has happened. Now take a long look at your present situation and preps. Look for areas where you’re lax.
What have you forgot? What do you need to do? Skills you need to learn or expand? Do you have adequate supplies to see you through? Could you make it if things never return to normal?
Go on dig deep – if you think there isn’t room for improvement you’re mistaken – there’s always room for improvement, no matter how well prepared we are. It’s just a matter of digging deep enough to find the soft spot in our armor.
We should have weekly, monthly and yearly goals. Today we are concentrating on goals to be completed by the end of this month – February.
So – lets set some preparedness goals – what do you want to achieve by the end of February?
I’m not going to call you up to see if you’re meeting your goals – but hopefully by putting them down publicly you’ll find yourself a little more spurred on to reach your goals and become better prepared in the process.
My Goals for February: I want to finish my book for Paladin Press and get another trailer setup at my place – so I’ll have room for family members who are sure to show up after TSHTF.

I'm taking a Red Cross first aid course (9 hours) on the 20th. I plan on following it up with their Wilderness First Aid Course. Funds are a bit low right now but I pick up clearanced goods at my local grocery store several times per week.

Not to nitpick too much I hope, but shouldn't that be "What _Are_ Your Preparedness Goals for February?"

Thank you for pointing that out – it's been a long morning.

Mainly medical supplies. Peroxide, rubbing alcohol, various bandages, triple antibiotic ointment, medical tape, etc..

However, I just got back from the store because I noticed in the sales paper that they had 4lb bags of granulated sugar on sale for $1.77. They would only let you buy two at a time, so I left the store and came back in twice. I'm gonna do this again at the end of the week. 48lbs of sugar for $21.24, or 44 cents a pound.

It wasn't really on my list for the month, but usually when I see the good deals at the store I just buy what I can. Anyway, it will help supplement the home brewing kit I'm buying at the end of the month when I get my tax money back.

My major project for this month is to inventory our provisions. I've been lax in keeping accurate counts and proper rotation – need to get better organized. I'm also going to put together a hand-made solar oven. Will be interesting to see how well it works even in winter.

Catherine February 9, 2010 at 6:44 PM

I'm going to get the hand pump installed on my well.

While the natural gas supply is reliable here, it is time to get some backup heat. Portable kerosene heater 23k BTU for starters. We'll see what effect it can have on a 5000 sq ft home – I think a few more are in my future. :-)

By the end of February I will have my portable greenhouse set up and some seeds started. I will also have bought two nucs of bees.

I am currently reorganizing my bookshelves to give a more prominent and easy-to-find place for my survival and how-to books.

I am not new to this but I have been procratinating fo years on this. So my goals are as follows and not just for Feb:
1. Land, 40 acres to build an off grid home for me and my kin
2. Ammo, never have enough
3. Storage food and seeds, enough said
4. More survival equipment, extras are nice for breakage and for trading
5. Training; medical, weapons, unarmed, low tech skills. Knowledge is power
6. Gold, silver and other precious metals and stones.
its not a long list but its things me and mine will need and I plan on being better prepared this year.

Starting my garden this weekend. Gotta get some decent roots built up before the sun gets serious. Arizona can be tough on plants. We're in the mid to high 60's now, so it's time to get things planted. We waited until late april last year and had terrible results.

Next on the list is some firearms training. I'd like for my wife and myself to be comfortable with both our shotgun and SW .22lr pistol. If she likes it, I'd like to add something with a little more power. We've got 2500 rounds of 22lr and a about 150 of 12 gauge shells. I'd like to pick up a Ruger 10/22 and maybe something more powerful when finance allow. I don't want to have to stockpile too many different type of ammo, so the Ruger is likely next, followed by a small 22 for my wife's purse. Arizona may be relaxing its concealed carry laws, I hear. I think guns create a polite society.

More canned good, water filter,90 supply of prescription meds, more ammo, and more knowledge..

Thanks for the great site….

Already accomplished this month:
1) Make homemade soda…little things keep life enjoyable.
2) Buy kerosene heater as a back-up and a beginning kerosene supply.
3) Research solar passive design and geothermal ground source heat for the home we hope to build.
4) Purchase large pressure cooker/canner.

Yet to accomplish:
1) Buy and begin (indoors) non-hybrid garden plants and learn to save the seeds they produce later in the season.
2) Complete GOOD bags for each family member.
3) Make a GOOD plan (A, B & C plans) and begin to discuss them with the kids.
4) Continue adding to water and canned goods on hand.
5) Learn to can meat.

And lastly, for Valentine's Day, forget the chocolate and flowers, take a gun course with me.

Anonymous February 9, 2010 at 11:41 PM

I really need to concentrate on non-hybrid seeds and getting into better shape, or at least starting to get back to fighting weight! Thanks for the great blog!

Give me a moment here. I live on the eastern shore of Maryland. And as most of you know we have had three major blizzards in 7 weeks with accumulations of 18-24 inches each. (NOT at all normal for us)I have witnessed first hand the panic of near catastrophic conditions. All 6 major grocery chains are devoid of milk, bread and eggs. People have turned to a pack of rude, riotist pack of animals over food and shovels. This whole experience has opened my eyes to just how bad things are going to be when TSHTF. Although I was prepared, I still can't beleive that there are folks left in the world that would let this happen to themselves. It is truely scary.

cj428 February 10, 2010 at 4:48 AM

I'm going to rent A place to live in area I want to move to and look for place to buy.

Anonymous February 10, 2010 at 6:20 AM

I'm just trying to build up some food preps and continue getting supplies for BOB. I also need to start working out again, I've been quite lazy this winter.

theotherryan February 10, 2010 at 7:43 AM

Replenish first aid kit with up to date/ not expired stuff.

Build a paper address book.

Get a good supply of rechargeable batteries and a solar charger.

Use my World Band radio more when the antenna comes. Also got a book of different radio stations to listen to which should help.

Store some more food.

Save a few bucks for some ammo.

The internet reaches far more people than anyone would have ever imagined, though no easier to gather those willing to retreat, to inspect, to further…to think on their own.

What does anyone expect in case of loss (hurricane, tornado, earthquake, flood, fire, etc.)?

The disaster itself is news. What happens after the dust settles is the story.

Insurance policyholders, and more importantly disaster survivors, need to be informed of access to basic rights and information. Much is available, gratis! It just takes looking: http://www.disasterprepared.net/info.html

Going to have another couple cords of spit wood delivered to stack and season for next year. A friend had a few oak and maple trees felled on his property. This will complete next year's supply. I will add another bucket each of rice, red beans, pinto beans, wheat and quick oats to my supply.

Joel the K February 10, 2010 at 2:58 PM

We (my family of 4), will purchase 25 lbs. of Bloody Butcher Heirloom corn from Big John Lipscomb. I need to really get a large quantity of powder-milk or milk substitute. I need to look through your archives and see if you have an article about the milk situation. My family lives on milk, and I have neglected this crucial staple. That is my main goal for February, get our long-term milk supply prepared and in the house. Your website is fantastic man, great job. I signed up to get it e-mailed to me daily.

Mary February 10, 2010 at 3:27 PM

Feb:
-revisit the laundry room and small pantry in my house, make sure they are well supplied. check on their supply inventory downstairs, use budgeted "supply" money to further inventory toward 1 yr goal.
-add monthly "long term" money to stash. (goal is a cast iron wood stove with hot water reservior)
-finalize garden plan, order seed/plants
-food storage this month: week one off meal plan, purchase and store, also purchase 20 lbs. sea salt from local natural foods store. (.71 p/lb)seems like the best price available in my area. prep and store.

WinOregon February 10, 2010 at 8:07 PM

My Prep Goals for Feb:

1. Become proficient with the reloading kit I just bought.
2. Cabbage is cheap now so will put up some Kraut.
3. Re-organize supplies in basement – a never ending task ;-)
4. Complete Part 1 of my homestudy Math course.
5. Buy any items we are low on in Pantry (done weekly)
6. Plan garden, start buying seeds/sets.
7. Continue learning about back-up power supply options and batteries.

Anonymous February 10, 2010 at 8:10 PM

I already received an order of wheat and plan to order more milk powder and alfalfa seed for sprouting. I am getting ready to pressure can 4 jars of pepperoni slices.

Anonymous February 10, 2010 at 9:41 PM

)To go without the radio and have complete silence by the end of the month.
)To go through my bug out bag and my larger pack and reorganize, adding what is needed and removing what is not absolutely essential to survival which I have nearly gotten to perfection but I still feel I can downsize just a tad more.
)To add another thick black contractor bag to the larger pack. Still have to put one into the bug out bag but the bag is a bit small but working on it.
)Refresh my smaller water supplies for the bug out and larger packs.
)Purchase the larger fanny pack with the wide-mouth bottles, one on each side of the bag and this is because the bottles are useful because while one is being used for drinking the other can be used for collection of and sterilization of water (using the iodine method), making a very ideal situation wherein water is needed.
)To get several bottles of tincture of iodine-2% for water treatment.

- Finally getting my wisdom teeth pulled. Ouch!

- Gonna go bush for the next long weekend to scout possible land routes to a remote bay where the local Maroons (escaped slaves) are said to have set up a place where -for nearly a hundred years- they managed to evade capture and had established a safe [enough] haven where smugglers could sail in and transport them to the relative freedom of nearby islands. I'll be looking for their source/s of water, caves, possible sites of their village[s], and any surviving remnants of their cultivations…Basically looking for insights into how they managed to successfully eke out an existence in an area that was deemed inaccessible to those who hunted them.
