Who me? Head of FEMA or DHS?

by M.D. Creekmore on August 12, 2008

I think you’re doing a great job. I gave up blogging – candidly, I felt like I had shared all I knew to tell people. Plus I found I had a lot of people reading it (great) but who wouldn’t do a lick to prepare themselves for anything (not so great). A few people told me my efforts helped them get started and get them on track, which I am thankful for.

I think your blog will help people – people who are already predisposed to prepare, which, ironically, is the LAST group we need to be worrying about in my opinion. The real secret which I never could figure out is how to motivate the typical American prepare for a simple, three day regional power and water outage. We are blessed as a nation, but that blessing can cause us to be complacent. After all, many say, if I want more water or food or whatever, I will just drive to the local Wal Mart and get it.

The two nations who are far better prepared than we are, in my opinion, are Israel and the former Soviet Union. Israel is prepared simply because they live in a society where people blow themselves up at the local grocery store or school bus daily. The citizens of the former USSR are prepared because their government required it (a law school classmate of mine, a cheerful girl named Olga, grew up in Moscow and told me she was required to field strip and reassemble an AK in 45 seconds in order to graduate high school. Those people are prepared).

If you can figure out how to movitate the typical American, you are a saint. And I will personally campaign for you to be the head of FEMA or DHS, provided you’d want the job. I am not sure I would. – Paul
