The extra weight equals better balance and feel, which could be why I have gotten the best accuracy from the Yugoslavian SKS or it could be the fact that the Russian and Chinese versions have a chrome lined barrel, while the Yugoslavian does not? If anyone has an answer or opinion please feel free to post it in the comments section.
The most important thing you can learn about any SKS is this, leave it alone! There are dozens of accessories available for an SKS but most do nothing to improve the performance of the weapon. Forget about folding stocks, high capacity magazines, scope mounts etc…
Leave it as is and it will serve you well. Take the extra money and buy an extra case of ammo, you’ll be glad you did. Trust me on this one. See you have already saved yourself $100 or more by reading this blog. Don’t forget to bookmark this site, and check back often.
In general, the SKS is an excellent all-around weapon that offers slightly longer range and better accuracy than Kalashnikov AK-47, but, for military use, lacks the magazine capacity and selective-fire capabilities. But for use as a low cost hunting rife or self-defense weapon in rural areas it’s hard to beat, especially when it comes to the cost /effectiveness issues.
Don’t ever feel under gunned if you have an SKS, a skilled man with a simple SKS is in a much better position then an incompetent one armed with the latest tactical weapon.
