We can’t know for sure how or when the world as we know it will end, but we are definitely headed for destruction. Some of the most popular scenarios for doomsday are natural disasters (and with the recent hurricanes, it looks like we’re not that far), nuclear terrorism or war (see the conflict between the US and North Korea) or, the more futuristic one, the zombie apocalypse.
Regardless of the scenario, we are closer and closer every day and the only ones who will survive are the ones who know how to behave in an SHTF situation. So, will you be ready to protect yourself and your family when general panic settles in? Will you be prepared to face the end of days and survive to tell the story?
It all depends on how well-prepared prepared you’ll be with the basics like food, water, shelter, clothing, and last but not least, weapons. While most of us know about putting together a BOB and how to find shelter in the wilderness (or how to prepare a secluded one), the topic of weapons is a touchy one. Firearms are well-regulated in the US and it gets more and more difficult to protect yourself in case of a doomsday scenario.
Still, there is time to get things back on track, and today I’ll tell you about the top 3 tactical weapons that should be part of your arsenal when SHTF. But first, let me tell you why you need more than one firearm.
Why you need More than One Weapon?
As a beginner prepper, you might think that a survival knife and a handgun should be enough for self-defense, but you would be dead wrong. If the society collapses, in several days you’ll see that what we called civilized people will quickly transform and return to their basic instincts.
One of the strongest instincts, rooted deep within ourselves is the survival instinct. We fight to live and reproduce even if the environment around us is completely inhospitable. Experienced preppers know this and they also understand the importance of defending their family and resources. Even more, after a while, you will need to find new food resource and this means going hunting or fishing (or both if you’re lucky to be located in an area with both types of food).
This also means you will need at least a gun for self-defense and one for hunting. Still, you should also own a gun for backup in case you run out of ammo on any of the first two or something happens with one of the guns.
The Three Basic Firearms a Prepper Should Own
In my opinion, three weapons represent the very basic arsenal a prepper should own in order to consider they are ready to face an SHTF scenario. If you want to be sure you are prepared, you should own at least 5 to 10 weapons and one of them should be a handgun that you can carry on your person at all times.
But today I will only talk about the three weapons you must have and know how to use.
#1: Kel-Tec SUB-2000 Carbine Rifle
The SUB-2000 is a semi-automatic survival rifle with specific features that make it the perfect design for difficult situations. First of all, it can be found chambered for the 9mm Luger or the .40 Smith & Wesson cartridge, both designs being capable of accepting several different types of magazines.
The barrel can be rotated upward and backward and you get a compact rifle that can be easily stored away or fit in your backpack. The stock is adjustable (three different positions) to offer comfort to the shooter, adding about 1.25 inches in the maximum extended position to the total weapon length. This also means that the rifle can be used by more than just one person, which is a very nice touch. It is also equipped with a small Picatinny rail for accessories.
There are also two Picatinny rails at the top and bottom of the barrel to add different accessories like optics, laser, or flashlight. Besides this, the forend includes five mounting slots on each side of the barrel for M-LOK accessories.
All these customization possibilities mean that you can improve the weapon as your skills as a shooter advance. Of course, it also means it’s easy to strip to parts and re-assembly when you need it.
The rifle features aperture type rear sight and AR style front sight. Only the front one can be adjusted for windage and elevation.
#2: IWI Tavor XB95 Semiautomatic Tactical Rifle
This is a bad ass design that works in any survival situation and works well in both open field and close quarters battles. As you can see from the image, it is short barreled, but it comes with the accuracy of a long rifle.
The rifle is equipped with several Picatinny rails for accessories and has a pistol grip that makes it easy to use. The compact design makes it great for storage and carry and the action is reliable and fast. It is also ambidextrous so it can be used by several shooters.
The barrel is made out of cold-hammer-forged chrome-lined steel to prevent corrosion, which is a very nice touch considering the fact that you will have little time to take proper care of these weapons. The same goes for the metal parts, which are treated to resist corrosion.
I also like the recoil pad made out of rubber to protect your shoulder from the action of this powerful rifle.
#3: Ruger Mini-14 Tactical 300 AAC Blackout
This is the next best thing after an AR-15. It is better in performance and power and has a lower recoil force. It can also be made to be very quiet compared to the aforementioned assault rifles.
The Ruger Mini-14 blackout accepts .300 AAC Blackout caliber bullets and comes with a shorter barrel (18.13 inches) which makes it easy to maneuver. The overall design is quite classy and the gun usually comes with a scope and a 20-round magazine which are great for hunting various game.
Besides the cool features it brings to the table, I like it for the self-cleaning moving gas cylinder. It is a blessing in disguise for a prepper fighting for his or her life. Also, there is a recoil buffer, specially designed to protect the sensitive mechanics of the scope.
Your Skills as a Shooter
As you can see, the tactical weapons above are pretty powerful. This means that you must be able to master them in any situation (battle, hunting, or self-defense) and you must know how to use them to preserve ammunition.
If you know you’re not such a great shooter, it’s time to introduce daily training in your life. This is the only way to develop the necessary skills and muscle memory. Still, since we’re not all within walking distance of a shooting range, you can always buy airsoft replicas of the weapons above and use them for training. If you don’t know how to find such weapons, a quick browse through Goog Gun should give you the perfect airsoft rifle to use for training.
Even better, these rifles can be used in a survival situation to preserve live ammunition and hunt small game such as squirrel or birds. Actually, specialists recommend small game hunting as a way of training your accuracy and learning how to aim properly.
Overall, the three tactical rifles I mentioned above are a great starter kit for your doomsday arsenal. Still, since they are semi-automatic weapons, you may need to go through several background checks before you can buy them. But once you have them and you keep up with training, you can consider yourself prepared for whatever may come our way!
