What I Did To Prep This Week: December 6th – December 12th 2020

Hello, Pack. It has been the busiest week ever here on our survival homestead. Not only did we celebrate another anniversary here on our dream land (which is exciting enough on its own) but my huge farmhouse table out of reclaimed barnwood and handhewn timbers is nearly done.

And that’s not all …

The survival homesteading event we have been working on in our Hocking Hills region is moving along at a rapid clip. I have about 26 presenters and demonstrators posted to the Old School Survival Boot Camp website and have a handful more than I am getting ready to post that section of the website.

Next, I will add the Boot Camp Market and Boot Camp Canteen (food) vendors website, as well. We have a great tribe working together to make the survival homesteading camp happen, and I am very excited to see how it all turns out.

Once the fairgrounds determines the amount of available camping spots and prices next week, we can get ready for ticket sales to go live, and start promoting the event and website on social media.

So many folks are eager to help and be involved. More than half of our county consists of state or federal forest, leaving very little room for attracting business outside of ecotourism and outdoor pursuits tourism (hiking, hunting, trail rides etc.) to the area.

Our county is a perfect little place to live, and showcasing the beauty of the region to tourists who come and fall in love with it too is a fulfilling way to live and make a living for folks here. But, the pandemic and the common defense defying dictates from our governor hurt the tourism economy here beyond measure.

Bringing a few thousands folks to the region will not only help them prepare to become more self-reliant and help their families survive a SHTF event, it will help infuse some cash into the coffers of some really good and hard working people who have been hard hit by the 2020 pandemic.

If you live within the state or a few states away, I sure hope you attend and meet, mingle, and learn some new skills – or hone existing ones.

This Week’s Questions

  1. Check out the Old School Survival Boot Camp website and let me know what you think about the emerging event. I value the opinion of the Pack.
  2. Do you think the pandemic or the government reaction to it in 2021, is going to further hurt our economy and increase the debt we are passing on to future generations?
  3. Is the governor in your state trying to cancel Christmas and keep everyone home and as alone as possible? Will you comply?
  4. What did you do to prep this week?

I will do that this week.

Do you think the pandemic or the government reaction to it in 2021, is going to further hurt our economy and increase the debt we are passing on to future generations?
    Of course!

Is the governor in your state trying to cancel Christmas and keep everyone home and as alone as possible? Will you comply?

Yes, he is. No, I will not.

What did you do to prep this week?

    This week:
    *Animals:
    -Puppy is really growing!

    *Garden:
    -Looking at seed sites.

*Prepping purchases/added a little to the stockpile: flavoring oils, OTC allergy meds,

I got the soap I ordered from Goatlover, and it smells great! I can’t wait to try it.

    *Miscellaneous:
-I’m working on my grab-and-go binder. It’s something that I’ve been meaning to do for quite a while. Important papers are together, but I still need to finish making copies for the binder. I need to get copies of the pets’ vaccines and add them.

It’s going to get bad very soon. Be prepared. Stay safe. He’s in charge.

  2. Well I have been down for 2 weeks . Bad sinus infection not covid. Started laying in next seasons seeds. Have a turkey in a curing brine about ready to smoke . Maybe next weekend.
Among seed ordered added sheep sorrel for the herb garden. It is wild in the area but this will make it easier to harvest.

  3. First Tara’s questions:
I gave a brief look at the website. A work in progress! I do love the tagline at the end of the welcome-This is not an expo, it is a way of life. I think it deserves a larger font. The middle section of the front page gets a bit wordy, is there any way to edit? Or maybe add a page. I think both the presenters/demonstrators and the schedule section are eye catching but you need a home button on the former page. A similar heading to that of the schedule page would work. Good luck on this event.

The answer to the second question is a resounding yes. I am worried that the debt has reached the tipping point.

The third is a no- at least no mandate at this time. However we most likely will not gather with a large crowd. An in-law held a large Thanksgiving and to this date almost half came down with the virus. A lot of missed work days and trips to the hospitals. Makes it tough on family run businesses.

We are adding a prep-canned oxygen made by Boost. One of the above mentioned family members was turned away from the ER as his oxygen levels were in the upper 80s and not deemed low enough. I suggested the Boost and they found some at a Love’s convenience store 30 miles north of their town. This nephew is in his late 30s. The small town hospitals are overwhelmed. The bursts of compressed air really helped him. Thought I would pass that along.

Our youngest graduates from grad school and will be moving 12 hours south. We will miss having her within a few hours of driving, but she is excited to start this next stage of life.

Most of my days are spent quilting, as cold weather has settled in. We are very happy that the moisture levels this year are surpassing last winter. Helps with the winter wheat!

Stay Safe everyone and don’t take life for granted. We are losing too many lives in this part of the country.

    • Moe,

The Boost O2 is a good idea. I have a supply of them in my SHTF medical gear. I was sick with what I thought was the flu in January 2020. It might very well have been an early version of the Kung Flu. I was short of breath periodically and taking a hit of the Boost helped a lot. I wasn’t sick very long or very seriously so my personal diagnosis was flu.

Thank you for adding those sources. Live remotely- over two hours to a Big 5 so it was an online order for me. But next time I travel that way I will look to see if on sale.

  4. I did my grocery shopping twice this week and kept adding a little more to my food stock. Still working to get the food stash a little deeper.

#2 daughter and her true love have finally decided to get hitched. They’ve been a couple for ten years, so they figured it was about time to make it legal. March 20, 2021 is the date they picked. Her hubby to be is a nice guy and his mom is well known to our family (really nice lady too).

#1GD and I were watching a YouTube video about US military machine guns. When they got to the M-2 .50 cal machine gun, GD started hollering, “Turn on Power Llama, turn on Power Llama!” This is part of a Christmas themed video done by the crazies at Black Rifle Coffee Company. The Power Llama is a llama with a pair of M-2 machine guns mounted on it that shoots up a car parked in the street. #1GD LOVES that video, especially when the car bursts into flames. The fact that she can ID an M-2 machine gun immediately is kind of amazing to me. And for the liberal morons who can’t tell a clip from a magazine should have a chat with #1GD who will teach them the difference. It’s pitiful when a four-year old girl knows the difference and adults don’t. Power Llama: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYULWlsRSug

#1daughter is now officially stationed on the first Space Force Base to be so designated (Patrick SFB, Florida). She isn’t in the Space Force though, but her AF Reserve unit is assigned there. No changes except in name as the base has been under the aegis of the old Air Force Space Command for years. Cape Canaveral is a Space Force Station now. Also, simply a name change. However, it will cost about $50,000 in signage changes. Yippee.

As I mentioned last week, #1 daughter and he family are spending a week or so living at my place while they get their house rewired. That job is going OK. Inspectors should be over early next week.

    This Week’s Questions

    1. Check out the Old School Survival Boot Camp website and let me know what you think about the emerging event. I value the opinion of the Pack.

I like the website so far. It’s a work in progress and seems to be progressing very well.

    2. Do you think the pandemic or the government reaction to it in 2021, is going to further hurt our economy and increase the debt we are passing on to future generations?

I don’t think the pandemic itself is as harmful to our economy as the government reaction is. I believe the government reaction is overblown and intentionally harmful.

    3. Is the governor in your state trying to cancel Christmas and keep everyone home and as alone as possible? Will you comply?

The governor in my state (Florida) is not trying to play Grinch, but a lot of the Democrats in opposition to him are. My family is not planning a get-together like we usually do, however.

    4. What did you do to prep this week?

See above. Nothing earthshaking this week. I have been buying some prepper stuff for my son and his family for Christmas as they need the help more than the others. Everyone is getting something prepper related as usual, just not as much as my son. He has an infant to care for in a SHTF situation, the others don’t.

      1. Check out the Old School Survival Boot Camp website and let me know what you think about the emerging event. I value the opinion of the Pack. I’ll have to do this later.
      2. Do you think the pandemic or the government reaction to it in 2021, is going to further hurt our economy and increase the debt we are passing on to future generations? The government reaction has and will continue to hurt the economy. No amount of taxation will cause a recovery either. All that will do is cause more people to be pissed.
      3. Is the governor in your state trying to cancel Christmas and keep everyone home and as alone as possible? Will you comply? Doesn’t seem to be leaning that direction and we have no interest in complying. Our children may choose to wear masks but we won’t. With our children and their spouses, there will only be 7 or us anyway.
      4. What did you do to prep this week? We have been recovering from being sick and will have test results later today to show that we are no longer contagious. I did pull up the eggplant that finally died. We have also spoken to some contractors to come take a look at some renovations we want to do. If all goes according to plan, renovations will begin in the spring. All I can think is “God laughs when we make plans.” Hopefully he won’t laugh too hard.

  5. This week I ordered another 50 pounds each of wheat berries, oat groats, and rye. I bought 6 cold weather goat coats from Jeffers for my little herd. Harvested my first round of mustard greens; pulled up the pole bean remnants, removing age pods for seed and feeding the rest to the chickens. Planted russet potatoes and carrots. Ground enough wheat for about 3 weeks of bread making to get me through the holidays.

I delivered 18 quilted pillows I made for residents of a small nursing facility, and also donated 3 lap quilts to another place. I ordered and received tins of seeds from Sow True Seed which will be gifts for some of my gardening friends. Also got a sprouting kit from the same source.

Soap sales continue to pick up as Christmas approaches. This afternoon I am delivering a dozen shower bars to a local farmer in exchange for more of my favorite—avocados. Developing a local network of commerce “trade” will be critical in the future. This particular farmer is a major prepper and I am happy to know him! He grows a huge variety of fruits, plus some unusual edibles like cranberry hibiscus for tea. Very interesting guy—I learn something from him every time I go.

Blessings to All and keep prepping!

As a retired Florida potato farmer why plant russet potatoes? They do not grow well in Florida. In my experience reds and white grow much better.

      Reply
      • Because I had leftover organic russets from Thanksgiving that I didn’t use, and I hate to waste!!! Will report on how well they do….it was only about 2 dozen pieces. Reds do grow pretty well, and of course sweet potatoes are crazy easy!

  6. Check out the Old School Survival Boot Camp website and let me know what you think about the emerging event. I value the opinion of the Pack. This looks like a very informative event. The far grounds should make a good venue. I attended Prepper Camp and the event location was on a hillside, by noon time I was exhausted from just one trek uphill to the restrooms. The web site is informative but the vendors and events listing could be rearranged into two pages with a more horizontal layout.

Do you think the pandemic or the government reaction to it in 2021, is going to further hurt our economy and increase the debt we are passing on to future generations? Biden has promised to DO SOMETHING to reduce the infection rate so yes. The president can do little to actually control what people are doing. He can offer states billions of dollars to pay people to stay home.

Is the governor in your state trying to cancel Christmas and keep everyone home and as alone as possible? Will you comply? Florida is letting people do as they wish. We will visit my youngest daughter (the one with the granddaughter) Christmas Eve to open gifts with my other children attending. My son in law’s family members will come over on Christmas day.

What did you do to prep this week? Added to my food stash. My pains have subsided so this week I will attempt some home repairs and start to get my garden in shape. I will be working slowly and carefully.

  7. This has been quite a week for the family, we are waiting for the Doctor to call my husband, to take him off life support this is hard on the family but it must be done. One of my cousins, they found she died from drug overdose, so sad 😞 I feel bad for my aunt they did everything to help her get off drug’s, but ultimately it’s the person needing to make that choice.

I’ve been coupon shopping again at Fred Meyer’s $10.00 off of $40.00 , I did really good along with free coupons, my total was $55.00 and left at $31.00. Safeway was $26.00 , got some baking items, pasta, they had great deals too I figured out I spending about $100.00 a month for a family of 4 which is not bad that’s $52.00 every two weeks , and it’s different food’s, so I’m getting Oatmeal, pasta, jar of sauces, bread, milk, cheese, even cat food. I’ve showed family members how I do it but they don’t have the time to try and save . It’s funny, because my life is not much different then their’s, I had babies and small children, teenagers and now young adults, and I still can shop and save, though we have to give ourselves a bit more of a raise maybe an extra $50.00 next year our garbage is going up and if you live in the city’s limits, you have to keep garbage, I may drop the food recycling bin until May that will save me $16.00 a month since I only put it out once a month in the winter, I don’t have the food or yard waste like Spring and summer times.

We’re not spending Christmas, with families, I will check on my parent’s and bring them some cookies, but the last few year’s, we have stayed home so for us it’s not a big deal for us .I’m sure our State will fall in line whatever California does Oregon, and Washington state, is not far behind, and Canada, is keeping their boarder closed until January 21, 2021.

They did do a zoom meeting last Wednesday with the family, hubby, and the two kid’s got to say goodbye to him we are just waiting for the Dr. to call right now he has a breathing tube, dialysis for his kidneys, now after a month everything is failing. As far as my cousin, she was a nice gal, but unfortunately the drugs really had their hooks in her .

      • Its my father in law, its heartbreaking, because last year we dealt with his mother, who thankfully is in a nice facility, in Sacramento, his dad, was doing great at 81, but he started having these pains and when they found the aneurysm by his stomach they thought surgery would out weigh, his liver function, but his k8dneys took a turn for the worst too.

Saw the nurse practitioner this week. Trying to watch my diet and my a1c actually went up. Got my vision appointment scheduled. Scheduled and completed my bone density scan. Since the tech let me leave I guess I passed. Now waiting for the referral to the oral surgeon. Hoping to get these things taken care of before anything too major happens.

  9. Puppy was being quiet when I came home from the store. Usually he barks and I know everything is ok as my son is at work and the Mrs is at our Daughter’s house. The motion detector alarm was working and I figured out what puppy had done. He put himself in the laundry room but no one was there to close the door. It’s the routine we normally do. So I howled and he came to the front door and howled and I knew everything was ok.

The Publix girl helped push out the buggies as I got everything in one but it turned into 2 when I left. She checked out the way the Jeep opened and saw the 2 bags that hang on the rear door and asked what was in them. I told her the one bag has a trauma kit and a first aid kit. The other has water, a water filter, life boat food a lighter, flashlight and a knife. I pointed out the fire extinguisher hanging on the roll bar and she said she felt so unprepared.

The Mrs was at our Daughter’s house because we have a new grandson. Yay, so tiny and cute.

    Food
Stocked up on frozen meals. (I hear that is the next shortage)
    Bought more meat
Bought more canned veggies and tomato sauce.

    Water
    Bought 3 cases of water.

    Thor’s questions
1.Did you see the footage in Michigan of a whistle blower being shot at while she was leaving for work? This was after a Democrat representative in Michigan told Antifa and BLM people to make trumpers pay.

    2. Did you see where they threw a bomb through a Trump supporter’s window at his home?

    3. Do you feel letdown by the supreme Court to not even here the voting fraud cases?

It’s going to be a Dark Winter. The economy is going to go into a full blown depression. Money is going to be coming worthless especially with the new green deal if Trump doesn’t enact martial law.

      • Ditto. Today, there’s a rumor of closed-door meeting of SC and Roberts did some screaming that TX case not to be heard, yelled down Alito & Gorsuch, told newbies to not say a word. Doesn’t want to cause a civil war by overturning election. Oh my. Well, it’s just a rumor at this point from Hal Turner.

        • Mari,

Yeah, its possible the Black Robe Society had a meeting on Thursday. That is the most common day that they hold “Conference” meetings to decide what cases to hear, hold votes on cases, and decide which justices will write what opinions.

However, Roberts is not the Commanding Officer of the court. He is primarily the administrative head and has no authority over telling other justices what they can and cannot say. Sure, he can make strong suggestions, but can’t do anything discipline-wise as an individual. So if Alito, Gorsuch, and the newbies want to make public statements, he can’t stop them. Granted, such statements may not be wise as they might indicate a bias or pre-judgement of a case.

  11. Good afternoon everyone. Blessings to all of you.

I took a look at Tara’s mentioned website, ‘Old School Survival Boot Camp’ and I liked what I saw. Can’t wait to see how it progresses. I took a look at my calendar and made a note of the dates, so I think I see a road trip in the future!

    Other points pondered:
Gov reaction to the pandemic; will this impact the economy?
My opinion is that if another lockdown comes in early 2021, it would absolutely hurt the economy. Businesses are still trying to recover from the lockdown earlier this year. Another lock down will certainly result in many independent owners calling it quits. Our Gov has been criticized very hard for not doing more (close downs & social distancing) earlier this year to curb the spread of COVID. Now, he has been sucked into the Senate race as a pawn to get the Dems in the Senate. Very hard times at the moment, and I frar more to come.

Christmas gatherings have been mentioned, but there hasn’t been too much of an indication to not gather (I.e. mandate). I think many (like my family) are being cautious about numbers gathering at any time…in my family, we have enough older members with some medical conditions that do warrant not bringing anything to them (germs/viruses), but we all got some good eats, talks on the phone and even zoom meetings with a promise of visits later. Our new normal I guess.

I was very disappointed that the courts dismissed the cases presented to them (voter fraud). Who do they serve again?

I know there are lots of things going on right now, and many are fearful of the future. Just remember who is in ultimate control. The reason for the season regardless of wether we can be with loved ones, or just speak to them on the phone. Stay safe. Stand Firm.

Looking at the potential leadership, IMO things are not going to be better.

    3. Is the governor in your state trying to cancel Christmas and keep everyone home and as alone as possible? Will you comply? No and his opinion (we got a new one this year) will not affect my family gathering together AT ALL.

    4. What did you do to prep this week? Well…

In trying to make our dehydrated eggs into a finer powder, I ran it through my electric wheat grinder. After finding and popping the breaker several times after it stopped grinding, I finally got “maximum smoke” out of the assembly. Last Saturday, I got time to take it apart, the motor/fan/grinding wheels would not turn. In “thumping” the motor/grinding wheel assembly to get out the trapped powdered egg, the shaft finally turned, but upon complete disassembly you can see the melted insulation on the winding wires. Monday we’ll order the new parts (including the plastic one I broke). I heard back from them, I’m not under warranty, but I can get a new motor installed for ½ the price of buying a new unit, so that’s how we’ll go with it.

The handyman was here Monday to do some work around here. Installed the ceiling fan in DW’s office (with plaster and paint on the ceiling), wire a new light in the basement, change the house’s water filter. We had to take everything off the tops of the desk, freezer, and shelves in the office. Putting it back allowed us to reset stuff for more room/better organization.

Picked up another EDC knife, a Kershaw Leek. This one has a black blade with green scales. If you are looking for a good EDC knife, I have been carrying one for 5-6 years, and I’ve found nothing better (although I have spent a few dollars trying). These have been going for $55-60 of late. I found our “Costco-lite” store is selling them for $43 ($40 for the red scales) (10% off for seniors on Wednesdays!).

Got my Cold Steel Blackthorn staff in Thursday. It should work well for walking/hiking. It’s about 5’ long with a large “knot” at the head. Good balance and weight. Made of polymer, but looks like wood. (https://www.coldsteel.com/blackthorn-staff-91pbst)

    Supply Run: Kershaw Leek knife; turkey SPAM; DM C&D; Plastic sheeting, 4 mil;

    Received: RH Black Bean burger #10 cans; Antenna, Adj., ¼ wave; Xmas presents; AF Cheese Blend, #10; Cold Steel Blackthorn Staff; Sandals; Bacon Cooker;

It’s making the legacy worse day by day.

    3. Is the governor in your state trying to cancel Christmas and keep everyone home and as alone as possible? Will you comply? She is. She’s the only governor to sign onto the Green New Deal. 2nd poorest state in the Union and in 10 years we will be required to be driving all electric cars. How does that work?
I’ll be home with hubs since the kids all have other plans this year. Suits me. No gifts to buy. I’m buying solar needs to finally have power after a year without. Things should be here by the end of the month….I hope. As the chicken coop and new small storeroom get finished up i’ll start building supports for my panels then work on hooking it all up.
    4. What did you do to prep this week. Working on coop between storms. Fresh snow tonight.

2 the economy will be fucked for at least 6 years. locally its depression levels, cuomo has confiscated 20% of the funding for schools and such and declared that he will be rapidly increasing tax reates for everyone if the feds don’t bail out nys mess, which was already in the shitter before the pandemic. i have been able to sell nothing this year, just get people begging for handouts or hoping i’m one of those desperate for cash so they offer less than 1/3 the price i have on stuff (like offering me $300 for a shed that cost me $700 for materials to build and i listed for $1400). nobody is buying anything, crime rates are up, all my firewood customers are counting on heap and can’t afford to buy from me (and i refuse to deal with heaps bs and be a heap dealer), food pantries are overwhelmed, etc etc. i expect it to get much worse when the feds shut everything down, give out unfunded handouts and cuomo jacks up taxes by 50% in a state thats already got the highest tax rates in the country. the states deficit is 90% nyc spending and the nyc public transportation system, rest of the state would be fine without those parasites. economy will probably be back on track in about 6 years but the debt to recover will take at least 20 years and the taxes to make it will crush the economy and probably keep it from recovering as much as it could.

not my concern, i’m a Celtic polithiest (Druid) so Christmas means nothing to me, no holidays between Samhain (October 31) to Imbolc (February 1st).

been about a month since i was last here. i had the guy i hired over summer come back and do the other half of my field, i now have 17 acres workable field, an acre garden with no rocks or stumps, and ditches to drain it all in the wet spots. i used the excavated rocks from the garden to build a 4 foot stone wall around the cabin and yard and a 6 foot pile of them runs the roadside with a ditch and barbed wire between it and the road. except the gates there is no way onto my property unless by tank. i cut a lot more firewood, did some constrution work improving existing buildings like my sugarhouse. a lot of the weather sucked with heavy rain and clouds so i was indoors a lot too. unable to sell anything i have taken to trading more. i just made a deal to trade the 8×11 mini cabin i was trying to sell for $1400 for a 12 foot wide disk harrow in good shape (so i can disk the new field in the spring), the farmer who make the trade hasn’t used them since he got a bigger set and wanted the cabin for his kids. made a second deal trading a second smaller shed for a large cultivator, and i have a neighbor willing to loan me a corn planter in the spring and a couple potential customers for the corn (new field never sprayed so i can grow organic corn which is in high demand and few fields around here have never been sprayed).

    • Nemoseto,

There was a guy in my Air Guard unit who declared himself a Druid. It was on his dogs tags and all. Our Wing Catholic chaplain was not a dyed-in-the-wool inquisition type. Whenever he came over to our building for a brief non-denominational service, he always brought a small oak branch so Ken could worship with the rest of us. It was hilarious.

  15. Hey from Douglasville,

For some reason I did not get an email copy of the initial post like I (almost) always do so I’m late to post.

We had an out door trader (a site I buy/sell/trade guns and stuff) meet and greet on Saturday morning for a bunch of the members at a local BBQ House (Hudsons). We had about 48 in attendance and it was great to see faces we hadn’t seen in about a year. We had a drawing (everyone brought something to be given away, I brought 2 PMags, 2 50 round boxes of .223 and 2 100 round boxes of .22). I got a box of 25 rounds of 12 gauge 00 buck shot, and I’m always looking for that, and DW won to blocks for 20 each AA batteries so she was happy with that. The food was great, alas not everyone wore mask so we will see how it shakes out.

Got an invite out to supper with DW nephew and his wife, and her sister and husband. We ate at Texas Road House and margaritas were flowing (I didn’t have any since I was driving).

I have avoided watching the news for most of the week.

Did the last of the Christmas shopping on Amazon and only have another 6 or 8 gifts to come in before Christmas.

We had a case of the virus at church so we shut down on Tuesday and didn’t have Bible Study on Wednesday and had virtual church today. Not hearing anything about the individual involved but hope/pray for the best.

I feel more and more that we are rapidly approching end times. Told DW that if I think the rapture is near that I will put a note on the dungeon door that food and water are available down below. Good luck to them. If I get left behind then all bets are off and don’t come knocking since I will be very grumpy without DW here.

Keep smiling, feel good and have a wonderful week leading up to Christmas.
